If you dont have any codes, I would suspect that you have carbon build up...you need to de carbon the engine... seach GM decarb procedure.

2 things I noticed buying gas from one particular station (Exxon)would cause pinging for me..I didn't really pay attention at first but I started to be concious of where I filled up and when the rpoblem started..so I stopped going there..also had the car tuned and that solved the rest of it...I also use Redline S1 every few tanks....I buy it by the case....12 bottles in a case I usually split the case with someone 6 bottles last me quite awhile since the car isn't my DD..

Very dumb question but what exactly is pinging? I have heard it several times but not really sure.

Another word for engine knock or pre-detination

Ping is cause by the compression of the fuel and air mixture as it approaches top dead center. pre-ignition or ping is the result of the fuel air mix igniting under pressure before the actual spark, this puts the position of the piston before it starts into the power stroke... gas will ignite under too much compression pressure. Thats why you need higher octane to prevent the fuel mixture from igniting in a high compression motor... carbon build up will increase compression, and this build up can make pre-ignition possible.. Increased heat is also a part of the pre-ignition equation.

Try adding Tectron to your fuel.

Its a rattling sound - much like a diesel engine. Sometimes people even refer to it as "dieseling".

You'll hear mostly during engine load - for example going up a hill, or when first shifting into a high gear such as overdrive, when you should be in a lower gear. The sound is more annoying than anything else because it should like engine is loose and falling apart.

Its more difficult to detect at higher rpm because of the high volume of the exhaust note...however, that's when its really dangerous and can cause damage.

You're not running California/Nevada gas, are you? Been there, done that. Did decarbs, plugs, etc. Lower temp thermostat helped a bunch. But, the true fix is a custom tune, which includes spark advance adjustment.

Dealership or DIY and a custom tune.
