Default Coil Packs

I have just been informed that I have two faulty coil packs on my 2000 C5. I was thinking of replacing them all with the MSD multi spark packs.
Does anyone have an opinion on these or should I just stick with the stock units?

I don't think you will get any performance gain from the MSD units myself. However, I believe the truck coils or some of the other stock GM coils provide a hotter spark, or at least I read that somewhere. Might want to try a google search as I think I read that on another forum, possibly the GTO forum.

if you can find truck coils or a kit from design 2 for the c6 you will get a better spark. You will need the bracket and coils not just the coils .

When you say two "coil packs" do you mean two coils or do you mean the coil assemblies?
I'm curious as to how whoever told you that you had "two faulty coil packs" arrived at this decision. You must have been experiencing one heck of a misfire(s)! These coils are very reliable and last a good long time. After all, they're each only doing 1/8th the work of the older style single coil ignition systems.
You can replace individual coils if you want/need. Very easy to do. The only real tool you'll need is a 1/4" drive socket set and use the 10mm deep socket for the two bolts on each coil. The rest is just unplugging spark plugs wires and connector plugs at the coils. The GM part number for the stockers is 12558948. Call Fichtner Chevrolet (forum vendor) for forum pricing. Much better than you'll get locally. Their number is 1-800-234-5284. Ask for either Bob or Tom and be sure to let them know you're a forum member. HTH

I was told that coil #2 and #7 are faulty. I have been feeling a severe miss at 3000rpm from time to time and the two dyno runs that I did a year ago showed some misses.
The shop temporarily replaced the two coils and the misses went away. I have heard that coil failure on the C5 are rare so it is odd I have two faulty ones.

Welp, if you're pretty satisfied that these two are your problem(s), replacing them is not only easy but not too expensive either. You should be able to get them both for about $100 or less from Fichtner.
BTW, if you're considering MSDs, plan on about $70 to $80 each, depending on where you go.
Keep us posted on your results.

MSD's are definately not worth the extra $$$. Do a search on here and LS1Tech and you will see that pretty much every person who did a back to back dyno varied by 1 or 2 hp. Stock replacements or ones off a truck like mentioned above are the best/cheapest route.

They could have been dropped and cracked. At least they know which ones are bad, so you only have to buy 2. But can you buy only 2?

These coils very seldom go bad much less 2 of them in the same car.
each coil just has a few screws holding them to bracket.
Switch their positions with 2 others and in fact see if the misfires also move. Also check the spark plug wires by using a ohm meter and seeing if all wires have about the same resistance value.

MSD is awful proud of their $$$ coils for no gains, I would check the wires before I replaced the coils, rare that 2 went at the same time.

gmpartsdirect.com has them for $35 ea or $86 for 2 coils, shipping included. You can't beat that at the dealership.
