I'm about to change my differential fluid and would like to hear your recommendations for which fluid and/or additive you prefer.
I've researched this to death, and there are so many differrent opinions, it's very confusing! Are you using the GM fluid with the full 4oz of GM additive? Redline or Amsoil without additive? Mobil 1 with additive? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Mobil 1, Redline, Royal Purple, and Amsoil are all top quality products and you'll be fine with any of them. I have Royal Purple in my Trans and Diff. only because it is sold at AAFES and that was the only synthetic trans fluid I could get locally.
I was going to suggest the factory fluid too. Unless the car will be heavily raced, why not continue to use something that has proven itself?
Proven to leak? Well, I'm getting a used diff to replace my 2.73. Its coming from a Z06, and the guy had used Redline, with 37K miles and no problems. I think I'll continue with Redline, and keep my fingers crossed. Any of these high end oils is good, but the problem is in the design and materials used in our diffs...
I had just installed the GM synt fluid & the 4oz bottle of Posi-fluid & then noticed the r/end sticking or screeching around corners/turns.
i then installed the ROYAL Purple from Auto Zone(which has posi fluid already added) & NOW the noise seems to be gone -- still not sure yet if BOTH REAR WHEELS are locked /turning at the same time - taking a trip - so will see if if works or brakes !!!!!!!!!!!!! but at least its quiet now
STILL DONT UNDERSTAND POSI & LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENCE & how they are supposed to work on C-5's (1999 w/315 axle stock)

When I changed my fluid, i added the "friction modifier" first. Then I added the Synthetic AC Delco fluid. You are supposed to take it very easy initially. The first 2 turns the rear chattered a bit. After that, no chatter, no noise.
The issue with this: it is my understanding that the chattering is better for track use since there is less slipping so less heat.... or so I'm told. I would try Redline next time since it is considerably cheaper than the synthetic AC Delco stuff.
