Default Under hood light doesn't work - connected and new bulb - HELp

Just bought a new to me 03 Z06 last weekend. Everything is great about the car except the under hood light doesn't work. Cleaned wiring connector and installed new bulb. Still doesn't work. Your thought and comments are appreciated. Thanks.

Maybe it is a bad fuse? Not sure if there is one specifically for the underhood light?

If you unplugged, cleaned and replugged the connections and put a new bulb in I am surprised.

I seem to remember complaints on the forum about having to buy the whole underhood light from a dealer rather than just a single piece. What I am not sure of is whether the single piece in question was the light cover or the bulb? Perhaps it's not the right bulb.

You could try replacing the whole light.

Id check for power at the light to start with .. If you have power there .. then no reason to check further on the fuses.
Next step would be power at the wires entering the light fixture ..

.

Just a quick idea.

Don't just start changing parts! Used a voltmeter to determine if you are getting 12 volts to the light bulb. I am also assuming that you have the ignition set to the "on" position.

If you have 12v at the chassis connector, but not at the light bulb socket itself, replace the light fixture. There is a motion sensitive switch (mercury switch?) that turns the light on when the hood is raised past a certain point.
Also, if you are not the first owner, make sure the previous owner has not installed a hood light cut-out switch. Several suppliers sell a plug-n-play harness to do this, so guys with their hoods raised at car shows didn't run down their batteries. The one I've seen have a small toggle switch installed in-line on the wire harness that leads down to the chassis connector.
The GM part number for the light assembly should be 10303617 and includes a new bulb. It is held in by a couple of pop-rivets. They will have to be drilled out and new pop-rivets installed on the new light fixture. The pop-rivets carry a GM part number, but should be readily available (much cheaper too) from any Lowes, Home Despot or auto parts store that carry pop rivets. They are .125 (1/8") and should be of the large head design. Very cheap and easy to do. The only thing is that stores don't just sell 2 pop-rivets, they only sell packs of 20 or 25, etc, so if you know anyone with a pop-rivet gun and pop-rivets you should be good to go.
Give Bob at Fichtner Chev a shout at 1-800-234-5284 if you need the light fixture. They're a forum vendor and will give you the forum pricing that's much better that your typical local dealer parts department.
HTH,
Robert

If the reading lights under the rear view mirror aren't working, then it's probably fuse #2 under the passenger side floorboard.

This may sound like a stupid question; have you tried the Chevrolet dealership? The part number for the underhood lamp connector should be 12162192.

A few more comments on the under hood light problem. I can't find a specific fuse for the light so I don't think that is the problem. I'm sure it's the right bulb. Vanity lights and rear view mirror lights work.Your lights do time out after about 15 minutes and this is definately not the problem. It must be in the wiring or the fixture/switch itself. I'll bring out the volt meter this afternoon and see what I get. All your ideas and comments are certainily appreciated and any other thoughts are welcomed. Thanks.

There is a specific fuse for the underhood light. Like SleeperC5 already stated: it's fuse #2.

You could try replacing the whole light.

Stealership replaced the whole unit on mine under warranty. Didn't even try to mess with it.

Mine did the same thing. Opened the hood without opening the door and no light, removed the key from the ignition and it came on.

The unit with bulb and lens cover is $13.00 at the dealer. Lost my lens and thought I could by the lens, WRONG had to by the entire unit.

That was the way mine was when I got it. No underhood light..I took the pading off and the wire had been disconnected. Guess previous owner didn't realize the light is on a "timer" to go out.
