Default Need advice on a "tool"

I had spinal fusion surgery two months ago and the neurosurgeon will only clear me to lift an incremental 10 pounds a month. That means I am up to 20 lbs. so far.

It is making me NUTS. I REALLY want to get the wheels and tires off my toy and tinker on the calipers, flush brake lines, etc., but can't lift the wheel/tire. Any suggestions on something I could use that maybe has a cradle of some sort that I can jack up under the wheel (with the car jacked up and on jack stands) just enough to get stud clearance and then back the assembly away from the axle? I thought about maybe something like a transmission jack or motorcycle jack, but suspect there is something around that does exactly what I need to do. I just need to know what it is and where I might get one.

Charlie,
I'm not sure who makes them or even what they are called. But there is a product that you can buy that is meant to sit under the tires of a car so you can move the whole car around a garage. Looks like a cradle with 4 small wheels on the corners. I assume you can jack the car put one of these under the wheel/tire and drop them down on it and wheel it off to a corner (or whatever) and do what you need, without actually lifting and carrying the W/T yourself.

I found the exact thing you are describing at Harbor Freight. If it had a way to jack it up, I'd be in bidness. I may just need to go over to HF and wander around.

Is that you or a buddy sitting on the Hog?

pm sent about the C3 in your photos.

Jack car until tire just barely clears floor. Side off with no lifting?

That may just work. Jack up far enough to get the cradle under, remove the lugs, then jack up the rest of the way and put it on jack stands. GREAT IDEA!

I would advise you to be smart and not risk it. Were talking around 50lbs for a C5 wheel/tire combo. Get a friend to help.

Also realize that straining to break caliper bolts loose is also risky...

And you can PLAN on it! I was feeling REALLY great last Monday, went home and fired up the weed eater to tidy up the yard a bit. BAD idea. I paid for it all week and the weed eater doesn't weigh 20 lbs. I only have to do something REALLY dumb like that about twice before I figure out I should stop. The weed eater made number three so my learning curve may be a bit retarded (27 year old brain that is lying like a dawg to my 65 year old body )

Went through a similar process in April .. except mine was up high in the neck. Much less recovery time than a friend that has a surgery very similar to yours.

You will "feel" much better within in a few weeks and want to do way more than you should ... DONT ... as your have already found out you will pay for it. from the time you really think you feel like doing things ... give it another 3-4 weeks of rest.

My friend didnt listen and pushed a bit too hard and too often now having some rought times getting the bones to heal.
His was done a year earlier than mine ... and recover is now going to be later by at least a year.

Myself .. i waited .. actually the wife MADE me wait ... Best thing that ever happened. (but im not telling her)

If you really have to do it .. have a friend help ...

To give you a better idea of just how silly I can be, my fusion was C5-6-7, so it was high like yours. I had the surgery 7 weeks ago and have a MOST stubborn brain/advice interface. I'm really ready for that recovery the neurosurgeon has been telling me about. He says what I feel now is referred pain as a result of nerve damage that may take 6 months to go away as the nerves regenerate.

If I can't tinker with my car before then, I just might as well go on now, 'cuz life needs to be enjoyed and my toy is one of the biggies. (just kidding Lord. Forgive me and bless the Pygmies in New Guinea)

Default Tire removal

They used to do this on big truck tires when I was a kid, just barely pick the wheel high enough to clear the floor, get a piece of plastic, or metal, about a foot wide, put some oil or light grease on it, and slide off the unit. Hope it helps you...

x 1000

Your spine is the foundation for everything that you do on a daily basis....don't push your luck! I know it's hard, but you should put yourself (and body) before the car. The car will be there when you're fully recovered...
