How hot do you think a cattex x-pipe gets? Mine burnt off 1200 degree paint!
As part of my large mod project I re-did my exhaust stuff. I got the headers, mid-pipes, and over-axel part of my stingers all ceramic coated w/ turb x 2000 degree coating inside and out.
I decided to save some money and prep/paint my catted x-pipe and mufflers b/c they can't ceramic coat the inside of those.
Coated headers
Painted parts.
Well today I looked up under and the x-pipe is bare metal again... most all of the paint is burnt clean off! The cat heat shields are fine and black and all the rest of the exhaust is still perfect as it should be. The muffler sections are also fine.
Just the catted-x-pipe... I cleaned, then claned w/ carb cleaner, then sanded w/ 300, then used etching primer and then painted the 1200 degree black so I know all that was one right.
I guess the x-pipe part just gets super hot

Your issue may have been the primer, am not a paint engineer. but , when i checked several high temperature paints instructions , most said to use clean surfaces or just etched not primed surfaces.

primer will not work with Hi temp paint, unless it is high temp primer
I did some headers with BAKED ON high temp coating from POR,,,I blasted, prepped and baked the stuff on and the motor I installed them on was already tuned,,,it burnt off..
bottom line, spend the bucks and get them coated RIGHT the first time, it will SAVE you time and money and look good for a long time'
I used Teofco in MI. for mine,, the stuff looked like chrome for years and now is a little dull ( 8 years of use) but holds up killer.
better than jet hot

I have had 0 luck with any primer as well. I usually just use grill paint, the 1500 degree stuff, touch it up when I have it up on the lift. My front pipes look ok. The paint is coming off my welds though.

Oh well.... the parts I got coated right w/ the 2000 degree ceramic black are just fine... and the catback which is painted is just fine. Just the x-pipe.
The primer I used is etching primer that you use when painting metal to increase adesion. You only spray a very thin coat so you can still mostly see metal through.
Oh well... you can't see it so who cares.
