MAF sizes and features question
**Update: Pictures of the MAF and measurements have been added below. **
So here's how I 'thought' MAF sizes/features went.
97-01 78mm MAF with 3 wire hook-up
02-04 85mm MAF with 5 wire hook-up
So...I picked up a spare 3-wire MAF I have in the garage and decided to use my new digital calipers to test it.
Being that's it's three-wire I should come up with 78mm somewhere..right?
Inside diameter is 85mm (3.3"), outside is 90mm (3.5")
Wall thickness of the MAF is 2.5mm, which makes sense, as the OD is 5mm larger than the ID.
comments?

There were actually
three versions:
97-00 75mm MAF with 3 wire hook-up
01-04 85mm MAF with 5 wire hook-up
02-04 85mm MAF with 5 wire hook-up & no screen (Z06 only)
I can't explain what you measured.

Will the 01-04 85mm with 5 wire hook-up work on a 97-00 car which called for a 75mm unit? Is the plug the same?

The plug is different (5-wire vs. 3 wire) and obviously the diameter is different.
The good news is that they make plug adapters for the MAF/IAT and other adapters for the air bridge.

Well, one has 5 wires, and one has 3, so no, they are not the same. 01 and up have an integral IAT sensor, hence the extra wires.

Here are some pictures for the 'show me' crowd out there.
What we've got here is a 3-wire MAF.
So...being a 3-wire job, it should measure 78mm right?
hmmm, not here. OD is 90.xxmm
OK, so what about the ID....
Uhh, nope...measures right at 85mm
Guys I gotta be missing something here....tell me what it is!

In addition to your clocks, have you set back your calipers?

Possibly an aftermarket 85mm MAF sensor for a '97-'00?

Very interesting. Do you have a newer true 85mm MAF to compare with? Also, do you have a metric ruler you can measure with just to confirm that your digital caliper is measuring correctly.
I have to admit, I'm confused. I have always heard that the 1997-2000 MAF is a 3" and the 2001+ is a 3.5" I was about to upgrade to a newer MAF, but now I'm not so sure it's needed.

I verified the caliper accuracy with a measuring tape.
For those that are metric/SAE challenged like myself here's the conversions:
78mm=3.07"
85mm=3.35"
90mm=3.54"

Are you measuring the

Maybe your filter is allowing dirt to pass. Then after billions of cubic feet of dirty air passing thru the TB at high speeds there has been a slow attrition of the ID.
Now this is just MAYBE.......

You are measuring at the wrong place in the ID. You have to measure the smallest diameter inside the MAF.
1mm = .03937"
