2001 C5 - Oil consumption, new rings, cam advice please...
Well after battling my dealer for 4 months officially on the oil consumption surrounding my 2001 C5 coupe 6 speed, they finally have surrendered and are installing new rings... Here is some helpful advice for those of you with oil consumption issues:
Here is GM's official party line surrounding oil consumption - don't let them lie to you and change the numbers (this is from their policy manual (or whatever they call it)).
-Break in is complete at 4000 miles
-Excessive oil consumption after break in is greater than 1 quart in 2000 miles
My car has 8500 miles now and has burned 1 quart every 1000 miles since new with no change!!! I have oil in the intake and they insinuated that 1 or more of the plugs were caked in oil...
It's finally nice to be vindicated and have the dealership no longer fight me on an issue that is clearly a problem.
Now onto the cam question- Given that my engine will be apart, the dealer may be willing to install a GM spec cam... My options are this:
1) 01 LS6 Cam/Springs - +10 HP with good idle and cheap!
2) Hot Cam - +35-40 HP with a rougher idle (too rough for my tastes)
3) Go back to a 2000 LS1 Cam - I think it is more powerful than the 01 LS1 cam spec.
What do you think? - They will ONLY install a GM spec cam...
What should be the install time given that the motor is out and in pieces? I think the cam should be ~20 min and the springs should comprise the "real" work of this install.
Thanks,
-Bob

Unfortunately, you cannot get a 2002 LS6 Cam yet... Anyone else? Anyone know the cam specs on pre-2001 LS1's?
