What i have learned is if you are using a Halltech set-up you may get some surging..With a Donaldson, no problems..You may pick up 3-5 hp, i believe you do..I studied it for a few months before i removed it..I ran 12:60-s @ 114-115 mph last weekend so i think it worked good with the other mods..My 2 cents... :D

Took mine out. No problems, not sure of gains yet. Supposedly there is now a fix for the Halltech surging. Email and ask them. They didn't want to post it on the other forum..must be some top secret info.

Mitch,
Went a little farther with mine - ported the MAF and had big problems. I removed the screen and the aluminum pillars, no problem at first but then the DIC went nuts. Just happen to have a great dealer/customer relationship and the Svc Mngr replaced the MAF under warranty - have not touched it since.

I have mine removed. Again, I can't say whether or not removing the screen helped or hurt. It all depends on what mods you have.

Do the 2002's have removed screens in the MAF?

Removed mine when I installed the K&N FIPK intake, just to eliminate the (minor?) restriction.
Don't really know what the net effect was, but I haven't had any problems.

Did it hurt or help your cars performance when you removed the MAFT screen.

[Modified by Mitch C, 1:54 PM 10/3/2001]
This depends on what other mods you have and what the fuel trims / AFR is.
If the engine is running a bit rich before yanking the screen then pulling the screen out which will lean trims a bit then your fine and will see a bit of an improvement.

If on the other hand your fuel trims are already too lean, yanking screen will make it worse for now fuelrims are even leaner.
Yes PCM does some adjustment but it does so as for best emissions not performance calibration.

If you pull the screen it might put your fuel trims trims on thedge of being too lean and you feel suging/less performance or more pinings in hotter weather that would induce even leaner conditions.

This can be simply corrected and allow you to tune out fuel trim or other performance issues by installing a MAF Translator ( MAFT you usd above) and thus tuning back in performance to take advantage of the increased airflow by removing the MAF screen.
'02 C5s now come without MAF screen but G.M also made tuning changes in the PCM calibration to allow that change to work correctly.

Default Re: Removing Screen Did It hurt or Help (COOL COUPE)

Had the MAF ends/no screen as part of my Halltech set-up. Car seemed to run great...no surging etc. Then started throwing codes and determined my MAFS had gone bad. Bought a new one on this forum and just for kicks, installed it "as is" with the screen in and much to my surprise, the car seems to run better/stronger (by SOTP). Will be attending the next Corvette Challenge and we'll see what the ETs tell us. BTW, I believe my car should be in the high 12s, only reason it isn't is my driving skill, or lack thereof. Also, have my old composite MAF ends and if the ETs are not better, then back in they go and out comes the screen.

I removed the screen on my 98. I have the Vortex cold air setup. I left the screen in at first & drove it. Then i took it out. I could feel the improvement immediately. So i figured i'd go a step further & get the MAF ends too. Car ran like CRAP! I put the stock ones back on & it was back to normal. I did a relearn with each mod. I learned you need to tune it with a MAFT to get the benefit out of the MAF ends. Since I don't have one & don't know how to use one if I did, I took the MAF ends back off. Mine runs great without the screen & stock ends. Seems everyone has different experiences though. Good luck. SCOTT

I installed the BPP Nylon MAF ends, so my screen is gone. IMO it made a difference.

I had the Vette Doctors remove my screen and I had the Z06 intake installed. I noticed a big SOTP improvement and it can be justified when I look at my tach, it is definitely taching a bit higher than before, showing the increased mixture. I think that the main reason for my happiness is that the Vette Doctors also updated my computer program to compensate. I never have any DIC codes since I let them do all the work.

I took mine out. Notice a definite surge on the top end when accelerating. It's been about 2000 miles now.

How difficult is it to remove the screen? Any tips/tricks I should know beforehand? Can you put it back in?

John,
You mentioned that '02 C5s do not come with the MAF screen. Is that true for all C5s or just the Z06?

I used a mechanics pick to remove mine (it has a curved end on one end for pulling). Don't go to far back or you will hit the sensors in the maf. Mine came out in two pieces. I don't think I want to replace it anyway as it gave me at least 20 extra HP    Ok maybe only 5.

My Z06 picked up 2 full mph in the 1/4 by removing the screen and adding a Donaldson.

I think all of the 02s are sans screen.

Hi: Removed my screen and reversed the ends of the stock MAF. Takes some grinding and fitting but you don't have the little shelf that sits behind the screen causing any turbulence if you do that. I would not remove the stock airfoil as I think it does help smooth the flow in front of the sensors. I tried the GMS MAF and had nothing but trouble and went back to the stock as described above. The old butt-o-Meter says it works fine although I don't have dyno graphs to support my observations. :D :D :D

My 2000 MN6 C5 dynoed at 303.5RWHP, bone-stock. After I added Donalson Blackwing Intake, Corsa Indys and have the MAF screen removed, I dynoed at 327RWHP. This is much higher than I had expected. I think a few of those horses came from having the screeen removed. :smash: :smash: :smash:

So far, I haven't ran into any codes at all.

I can't wait until the TPIS LT headers get put on. Hopefully I'll get another 15RWHP to make it to 342RWHP. :D

400HP Club (at the crank, of course), here I come
