Default When is it time to get new tires ?

How much tread depth do I need before I need to relace the rear tires. I have 28k on them, the front tires look fine, but the rear tires have only about 1/8" of tread depth. I priced a set of Mich. azp for $1200.00 for the four. Is that a good buy?I do not think it would be right to just replace the rear tires only?

1/8" isn't much, it's probably time to replace them

$1200 for all 4 is a deal. I forgot the exact depth, but a 1/8 th of an inch is pretty low.

Your car, your life, your choice.

Typically, the annual state inspection will not pass tires that have less than about 1/32" of tread on them - in Texas at least.

I run Firehawks and get about 25,000 before swapping them out at $1600 a set. When you are moving along at 140mph plus, good rubber is a must have. Also, if a tire shreds at 75mph you can trash a fender or more on your car.

Best of luck.

Default It's Time When

Don't go below 5/32". Consider replacing around 5/32" or 4/32" as EMT's will hydroplane at that tread depth. In May of 2006 my EMTs had 22,000 miles on them and were down to ~ 3/32" to 5/32". I replaced them w/ Michelin Pilot Sport A/S ZP’s (ZP= Zero Pressure or Run Flat). They were $235.00 and $335.00 respectively from the Tire Rack. The same EMT was $100.00 more per tire! TR can refer you to a local installer in your area. These Michelin tires are much quieter and have a better overall tread ware, traction and temp rating than the EMTs.
Michelin (UTQG) Rating = 400 AA A, EMTs (UTQG) Rating = 300 AA A

Just like Mario Andretti says.... stick a penny upside down in the tread and if you can see the top of Abe Lincoln's head, it's time to change the tires

Replace them before they look like this:

I'd say anything beyond the wear indicators is pushing it. They're there for a reason.

Do you mean in general or using a mismatched set front/rear. I would avoid the latter, but I typically go through 2 sets of rear for every set of front.

Check Discount Tire Direct for the Michelin runflats. They typically run rebates - I got the set for $1,050 - free shipping.

the wear bars are set at 2/32 of an inch on all tires. 1/8 inch (as stated above) is 4/32, normally it would be time to replace tires at 4/32, on the other hand my vette never sees rain so im not that concerned with wet traction. i run my tires down to legal limit(2/32). also do not judge/buy a tire based on tread wear rating. that number is given to the tire by the company that manufactured the tire, they can put any number they want on it. (its not the same rating throughout the industry) and yes i do work at a tire shop.

Using a penny, put the penny into a tread groove with Lincoln's head upside down. If you can see all of Lincoln's head, it's time to replace.
