Any tips on replacing the steering wheel position sensor?

I've been seeing DTC codes 1287 and 1288, steering wheel position sensor errors, for several weeks now which disables the active handling. First thing I did was clean the grounds on the front frame rails and reseat the EBCM and SWPS connectors, but that didn't work. With the help of search function and Bill Curlee's post in http://forums.corvetteforum.com/showthread.php?t=1650217|this thread I've determined my steering wheel postion sensor is bad.
I stuck probes from my multimeter in the back side of the connector and found that the sensor is getting +5v on the orange/black and ground on the gray, but the two signal wires, pin 5 and 6, show dead spots (sudden drops to .5v) as I turn the wheel.
The shop manuals outline the proceedure to remove the steering column and replace the sensor, but several posts linked to http://www.ddisoftware.com/c5-procs/ as having an easier way to change it out. Unfortunately that link is no longer working. Any one have any advice on the best way to do this?
Also, from what I've read it seems for my '01 the sensor is GM PART # 88965543 which lists at $70. Just want to make sure that's correct as it just comes up as Sensor on GMpartsdirect.com.
Thanks!

This is a thread that will never die, because most of the SWPS eventually will!! Anyway, I also have a 2000 'Vert, and am trying to double check your claim that the Auto Zone Duralast SU7848 is in fact a viable replacement to the OEM. Has anyone else verified, or tried it on the '97-2000 models? I'm being told the '01-'04 sensor will NOT work on the older models.......

Hello
I would like to thank the forum in general for posting .The post info.that helped was to "check the connector wire below steering wheel by cabin first ,before you order any SWPS. This quick check worked for me ! I just pushed the connector in and a slight wiggle.

I had the active handling problem so i removed the EBCM solder the appropriated spots and reinstalled it. Everything was fine for a few weeks and the problem started again. I removed it again and this time sent it out to be repaired. The guy i sent it to called me asked a few questions and then said he would test it and let me know. He told me he found the problem and repaired it. He sent it back to me and i installed it. After about 10 or 12 miles it started, the active hadelin on the dash would light up and the brakes would shutter a bit. After that happened a few times the active handling light comes on and the dash says service active handling soon. I had cleared all the codes so I checked to see if there were any. The code 28TCS C1287 Came up I cleared the codes a couple times and drove the car again and get the same results every time. Does anyone know if the sensor on the steering column is bad could that be the problem with everything. And I did check the grounds and they are good. I also have the telescopic column so maybe i will have a mechanic do it. Anyone know a good vette mechanic near ludlow/springfield MA.

Advanced
Another trick to try( and I used to do this at the dealer) is to raise the front wheels off the ground and turn the steering wheel lock to lock about 60-80 times pr side and most of the time the sensor fingers cleaned themselves up.

steering sensor calibration tool
I'm having trouble finding diagnostic tools for the 2001 C5 besides the Tech 2 A lot of the tool features are for 2005 or after. Anyone know of a tool to calibrate a new steering wheel position sensor?

Where are you located? Someone near by might have a Tech 2 and can help you.

The sensor is within the green housing. the steering column has to come out of the car to replace it. When removing the steering column do not rotate the steering wheel, you can throw off the position of the column and possibly break the clock spring for the air bag.
With the column out of the car, the white cap can be removed from the end of the column and the steering position sensor carefully removed. Install the replacement in the same orientation as the old one carefully pushing it onto the column.
Post 138 has a step by step with pictures for changing the SWPS. This one shows the newer style for 2001+ cars but the process to change is the same.

The part number in the part manual for a 2000 C5 Corvette should be part number 26058286. It looks like the black one in the top picture. I looked it up on ebay and verified in a photo the part number. They usually have the part number printed on them.

Thanks for the info on removing the studs.
After a hard 182,000 mile run she finally started jerkin me all over the freeway with C1288.
Too unsafe not to fix. Did it the hard way, no tires off, leaving the column in the car (telescoping). 2.3 hours and a little swearing.
I dabbed some grease on the firewall grommet and had no issues.
Getting the shaft back in the coupler by myself was the most irritating part.
No more codes or active handling issues.
