I FINALLY went with a different Torque Converter (pick yerself up off da floor)
#42
Thanks MIke, my trans finally failed from tracking, won't shift into 3 or 4 anymore, so I just ordered a Level IV from RPM and this same TC from Gene Culley.
I hope everything works out well for me.

a. prices of aftermarket stall converters are rediculous.
b. I don't want to add an external cooler.
c. I don't like the feel of a high stall converter during normal driving.
d. Since I personally will always have run-flat type tires on this car, I didn't want to lose all
hopes of usuable traction. I like my Corvette to be a no-brainer to drive.
e. Presently, I could only powerbrake up to 1400rpm; that I would like to increase that.. but no more than a couple hundred RPM increase (because of requirement "c").

Mike I agree 100% with these. I got a TCI secondhand for my 99 Z28 for $300 a rare find in the UK! While I could not argue with a 1/2 drop in 1/4 mile time, I Hated how loose it made the car feel for a DD and traction was at a premium most runs I blew away the tires (needed DR's next)
I swore I would never do a stall to this Vette but one that gives all you describe at that price is a very good find. I can also see the sense in using 3.42 as they are available secondhand from guys upgrading their M6 cars!
Makes sense to do gears at the same time as the axle has to come out anyway.
My problem is there is very liitle expertease in modding Vettes in the UK and the cost of shipping these heavy items from the USA is also prohibative. So I will have to stay stock! Darn it!

Thanks for taking time to write it up your expreince and share all the info on this GM converter. Your goals sound just like mine. This is just the type of thing I hoped to learn about my '99 A4. I just turned loose of my old '94 C4 6MN, AKA the Red Grenade. The C4 got the Red Grenade moniker from my breaking the driveline so often at the strip; too much clutch, drag radials and a banzai driving style was a bad combination; you just can't drive it like a Ford with a toploader and 9". So the C5 A4 is just what I was looking for. The C4s have been fun, but this C5 is just too nice; I've come to appreciate the C5's total perfomance. Truly a nice car to drive, no penalty for performance. As I explore the options going forward, I'm coming to the conclusion that too many performance mods will only detract from the wonderful character of the car. My plans always included a TC and gears, but this experience shared by Mike will impact how I proceed. Priority one will be the TC and gears over power mods. But I couldn't stop myself form adding a Corsa Pace Car exhaust and a set of C6 Z06 wheels to my Silver '99 in the first 2 weeks. FYI, I think the Corsa set up is perfect. C4 had Magnaflows, TPI LTs, hi flo cats, X pipe and a wicked drone. No drone with the Corsa, monster sound on WOT.

Burning Brakes
Mike-
Next time your at the strip, try this, bring the car against the brakes and bring the revs to about 1100 or so and when the 3rd yellow comes on jam the throttle to the floor, this works great for my car with a 2800 stall. It runs 12.50's on a cool day and 12.70's all day every pass in the heat. The only caveat maybe is that it may blow the EMT's loose, I use MT DR's. But I figure it's worth a try. As always YMMV. Jeff

but I don't need new tires.
I only went to the track to see if my SOTP meter was lying to me or not. And I stated that with ideal conditions with my previous "best", I believe I would gain a total of two tenths. I am not a dragstrip regular; nor do I yearn to be either. It's just not me.
I only go to check the gain of recent mods; then I'm done running the 1/4 until the next round of mods.
When I do replace the factory rear tires, than I guess I'll gain yet another tenth.
Great!

good point...
cept I had to have the rear tranny seal replaced anyways. There was no added labor to have the TC done at the same time... just the half-priced (when compared to aftermarket) cost of the converter.

Only thing I can add after all this time is that definitely there is not an overheating problem with the tranny temps. Not even close. Truly no external cooler is needed.
