Default Brake Pads Material???

I need to change the pads on my 98 vert. Does anyone know what material the STOCK pads are? Metallic, semi-metallic or ceramic? Thanks.

Stockers are semi-metallics as far as I know.

Why do you ask? Pad compounds are much more complex than back in the day when semi-metallics came out. Now virtually all pads (except ceramic, and those I'm not sure about) have some metal embedded within them.

So, what are you wanting in a replacement pad?

well its basically a stock vet and right now I want to leave it like that but not sure what pads to order. alot of places offer ceramics. I have had alot of people say that ceramics no dust but the are extremely hard on the rotors. so what pads should I order gm pads?? are they semi's??

Order the stock pads from one of our GM forum vendors. They are much cheaper than going down to your local stealership, plus they come with new hardware.
Unless you have a specific need for the pads, i.e. racing, auto-crossing, etc the stock pads are very good. That's what I used when I replaced mine a couple years ago and I have been happy with them.

I think gm pads have 2 different kinds of pads semi-metallics and the ceramic. Does anyone know the part # for the semi's???

Not the case. I have the ceramics on my Z. They are very rotor friendly so far for the past two years. Very little dusting. I have the part number for these, but not the semi-metallics. Let me know if you need them. Don

Fronts 88909667 Rears 88909668. Check with Gene at GMPartshouse over on the left. He had pretty good pricing on these a while back. Don

Not exactly to either. Ceramic pads dust like normal pads, the dust just isn't as visible as OE pad dust. I don't think they're any harder on rotors, in fact they may be easier on them.

However, the big drawback to ceramics is a drop in braking performance over OE pads. They don't deliver the brake torque, nor do they take heat as well. If all you're doing is street driving, then the ceramics are probably OK, but you've gotten used to the honestly fairly stellar braking capability on your OE pads, and now you're going to take a step down from that.

HTH, and have a good one,
Mike

Yup. BTW, the Z06 never came with ceramics from the factory.

I have two other suggestions:

1. The stock Z06 pads from '02 - '04
2. Hawk HPS pads

Either of these should provide better performance than the original stockers or the ceramics.

Same for all C5's. Call Gene at GMpartshouse. He can get you the numbers and or whichever pads you decide to go with. I did not lose that much braking on the street going with the ceramics, but I do not have to clean my wheels a bunch anymore either. For the track or aggresive driving go with the stock Z06 pads. They are hard to beat. Don

Default Brakes

I switched to Ceramic pads and loved them, because they keep the wheel much cleaner. However I would never use them again, because they do not feel and perform as good as OEM. In stop and go traffic they feel weak and have not brake feel.
