Default Fuel Gauge Level Problems

Guys,

Does anyone know of a fix for the fuel level problem. I have taken it to GM already and they have replaced the sensor. That was a few years ago, but I am having the same problem again. I have tried running Tetron through the system, but not sure if there is anything out their stronger that would get the job done.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try to purchase a Top Tier fuel. You can visit their web site and find out who in your area is part of the group. Around where I am its primarily Shell. The other thing I have been doing is running FP60 in every tank to prevent this from happening. Both a friend and I bought some Sunoco a few years ago at the same station on the same day (price was good), within a week we both had the fuel gage issue.

Put in a bottle of Techron in your gas tank. If first tank full does not fix it, use a second. Then use only a top tier gas, see toptiergas.com

It is the sulphur in the gas "gumming" up your sensor.

Both tank sensors replaced twice. Use techron and chevron and still at 1/2 tank unreliable.

Solution. Reset trip computer each fill up, at 275 miles in town driving fill up.

Danged if I know,, but on the highway traveling the danged thing works normal but park it and try again . NUTS to the fuel gauge. Might as well have a stick/cork float in front of the windshield .

Default Gummed up

I started to have the problem but then I switched to Chevron with techron. I only use Chevron. Give it time. The sensors got gummed up over time. It will take time to clean up.
What type of gas do you use?

I cannot say for certain but I think you want to make sure you are using the Techron Concentrate. Try runnig a bottle in two successive tanks of fuel. I think they make two versions of Techron with the Concentrate being a bit stronger. You then want to run this stuff on a regular basis as preventative maintenance. Helps prevent carbon deposits on intake valves and pistons. Me, I use BG44K once per year. Never had an issue with my fuel gauge. BG products are sold at professional repair shops. Good luck with it.

Holy Cow! What's in that BG44K and why is it so darned expensive? I couldn't believe the price for 4 cans on ebay. 60 bucks!!! With a funnel....HA! Is it better than Techron or Seafoam? And why....? Thanks.

I have had the problem of and on when I read in corvette fever about usig Amoco white gas or Shell and always parking it with at least a little over half full,Because of the saddle tanks one could stay empty if you don't and the sensor dries out. I tried it and it worked and no problem for two and a half years.

I had the same problem. I read about Techron and one guy mentioned Sea Foam in the tank. I tried 2 cans of Sea Foam in the tank first and within 2 tanks problem is gone. I am following up with Techron from time to time and trying the top tier gas from now on.

I had the same problem and have use Techron several times with the problem returning. So I tried GM Fuel System Treatment. That was over 4 months ago and the problem has not returned so far.
Good luck..

Same here. I use only top tier gas and Techron in every other tank. Still have problems when guage goes below half tank. I use trip odometer to tell me when to fill 'er up now since you cannot rely on the GM guages. My fear is that the trip odometer will soon learn to lie just like the guage!!

Buckwheat, what you describe is logical but incorrect. When the car is running, fuel is pumped from the right hand tank into the left hand tank, keeping the left hand tank full until the right hand tank is empty. When the car is parked, the fuel level in both tanks equalize via siphon - both tanks contain equal amounts of fuel when parked.

This is why the fuel guage craps out at about 1/2 a tank. The right hand tank is empty, exposing the sender/sensor. If the silver plated sensor is contaminated, and can't tell the computer it's empty, the computer assumes there is a fuel flow problem and sets the guage to empty.

You might also have noticed that your fuel gauge reading is different when you first start driving, compared to a couple of miles down the road. This is because, with less than a full tank, the computer is estimating the amount of fuel until pumping fills the left hand tank. At that point it's reading actual fuel.

Techron is a great product when used as a preventative. Usually it will not "fix" a badly contaminated sensor, but well worth giving it some time to do so compared to the cost of replacing the sensor!

John, I can't speak for all of the products, but I'd guess most of them are available at auto parts stores. For sure, Techron is. Comes in two sizes for 12 gallons and 20 gallons. You want the larger one, or if using the smaller one, do it at 3/4 tank. What most people forget is NOT to fill up before the tank gets nearly empty. Doing so will dilute the mix.
