Targa Top Refinsh How-To

How do I tell whether I have a stock black roof or a clear one painted black? Mine came black and looks fine. Inside looks shiney and no headliner. Does the stock one have a fabric headliner?

Holy Moly Dude! That is awesome!
The top on my car is sooo bad that when people come close, that is first thing they see...UGH! But it doesn't leak and spending the money for a new one...well, I opted to wait and see if anyone had any instructions on how to fix, and this is it!

I just finished mine. Used 800, 1000, 1500 grit, McGuires scratch remover, Jewlers rouge and finished with paste polish. Did not clear coat it at all. It came out looking brand new from the outside and the inside. Washed it once already, polished again this time with McGuires and again it's great. Lots better than paying for a replacement. Total time using a sanding block, porter cable, about 4 hours start to finish. good Sat a.m. project.

A few weeks ago I did mine too. Sanded, then a few coats of clear, color sanded and buffed. Done deal.
I'm now thinking of having window tint material applied to the underside of the roof to hold off the Texas sun.

i wanna cover mine in a layer of carbon fiber, and then clear it. i think it can be done relatively cheap. i think i'm going to grab a painted one that is messed up tho and not experiment with the one on my car, plus I like the clear top sometime.

I just finished my "$50" special purchase of one that belonged to a guy from the "flying roof club". Needless to say, very heavily scratched.
Started with 300 grit then 400, then 600, 1000 and finished with 1200. At that point I was wore out. Got it that far, shot it with "clear coat" you buy in the can from PepBoys, then wet sanded with the 1200 again, another coat, another sanding then the rubbing compound.
Also had stiped the top of all metal trim including what is shown as masked off at the start of this column. Those little bugs took some getting off and the replacement cost about $80 for both but worth the $$ when you consider I got the entire top done from edge to edge.
Know what, it turned out great. About 2 days of honest work on it but you know, when it comes to the Vette it ain't work, it's love!
So my top isn't show quality, the major scratches now look a little like ripples and the top is clear enough to read something with 12pt type on it from the other side.
I'm happy! Would I do it again....HELL NO!

Excellent info and worth bumping to the top for those considering this winter project. The photo below is of my top. Does it look like it could be saved?
