I bought a 98 with 5.3 heads and 224/228 cam. Headers and the normal bolt ons. It has developed a tic and at speeds a slight clatter. In the old days I would say it is a lifter going bad as it sounds like it is loose or out of oil. Could it be the nature of the beast? Do the 98's have the ring chatter, like the later trucks? I am getting ready for the tour and don;t want any problems.

Reason: wrong word
You must mean valvetrain? If it has developed a noise then I would say it could be a lifter or it may of spit the needle bearings out of one of the rocker arms.
I would either look at it or have someone that knows what they are doing look at it. C/h's, LT"s etc here and no noise on my 98. That is at 135 thousand miles. Check it out so you can sleep well at night.
