I know this is a popular topic, but I need some help. I m need ing soe ew tires but on my 2001 vete, and would like some opinions, as to what is he best tire to use. I do some stret racing, but also drive aroun town, and highway a lot. also want a tire that will not interfere wit the tire sensors. I w considering Nitto's, but Im open for other suggestions. Thanks and Merry Christmas!
I just picked up some Yokohama AVS Sport Runflats based on feedback I researched here on the forum. Could hear and feel the difference immediately. Quieter, stickier and less expensive than GY's. Recommend you put them on your short list. Good luck.
I'm really happy with the G-Force KD's I put on. If you want a really sticky dry weather tire, I would consider these. For excellent all around, I also recommend the Pilot Sports.
I just put on Yokohama AVS Sports (Not run-flats). WOW! What a difference. No only did the road noise decrease, but Yoko's have a softer ride at 35 PSI than the GY's did at 31 PSI ( I have Z51). With the GY's the C5 felt heavy and slow to respond. The Yoko's changed that, the car feels very nimble and very responsive.
One of the characteristcs of the GY's that I really disliked was the tendency to "slot car" (track with grooves and pavement joints in the road). That's all gone now. I've also had a chance to try them in the wet. As often happens, people trailing me through turns try to stay on my bumper (as if to say I can corner with you). As we know rolling through 90 degree turns at 30 is just routine in a C5. Well the other night it had been raining and some yokel was tailing me into a turn so I got on it just little with no problem. I checked the rear-view to see the guy fishtailing all over the road :-) I don’t know if there are any good rain-tires for a C5 but these seem at least as good as the GY’s. In addition, the tread pattern is very aggressive looking. The Yoko 295 35’s put 10 and ¼ inch of rubber on the road.
I'll carry can of fix-a-flat and pay to have a pressure sensor replaced rather than ever ride on the awful GY run-flats again.
I just installed the Nitto 555's stock size. WOW! Quite, sticky, and they track great. The price: $820.00 complete including the Hunter 9700 balancing job. I love them and don't think you can beat the price. My wife and i can now talk in the car and i now can enjoy the Bose. You want be dissapointed.
Kumho's can't be beat for the price/performance ratio. Nitto's are a close second. $580 shipped for a complete set from tire rack. Traction is much improved over the Firestone RFT's and they're wearing better. Do a search on Kumho for more info.
I'd like to have the Pilot Sports but I burn tires off too quick to lay out that much cash.
Pilot Sports if you do not want/need runflats.
Firestone SZ50RFT if you want runflats.
Both will be significantly more quiet, have more grip, and ride better than the GY's.
Michelin has discontinued the standard Pilot Sports. Now have Pilot Sport A/S, all season tire. Not as stickey as some, but a quiet good all around tire. Didn't like them at first, but the perform well. Especially in rain.
