Default Upgrading to the Z06 Dry Sump

I will be converting my C5 to the C6 Z06 dry sump soon and wondered if anyone has already done this and if so, what pitfalls am I going to run into.

For sure I know I have to relocate the battery and the LPE kit will do that perfectly. Also the PCM will have to be moved and that's not big deal. I'm not sure about the lines vs the headers but it looks like that is a non-issue. If I am lucky, it will be little more than a bolt on...time will tell.

I have a complete LS7 system and will document the upgrade

That will a really cool upgrade. You should go through it and then organize everything needed for the conversion and sell the conversion. I would jump on that. I saw a pic of one dry sump system (not the ls7) and it required modifying the header...needless to say it scared me off.

Nice, I've been interested in how this is done for a while now. Please post up docs and sell a kit!

It could be more complicated than you first think.
I am pretty sure there are two oil pumps, one to pump to the engine, and one to return oil to the sump, so there will also be wiring modifications.

Thanks for looking at the thread and the heads up.

However, the pumps are internal and require no electrical. What is required is the additional snout length to support the pumps, the LS7 front cover and the LS7 harmonic.

If that is all that you would need to modify that would be nice! Are you going to try and sell a kit once you are done?

It's almost all available with GM parts - I'm going to document the install and see what additional pieces are required.

If there are a few pieces that are tough to do we will fab up a batch and have them available.

Not sure this applies but I saw one installed on LS1tech and they had to cut the front header tube (Kooks, pass side) and reroute it to clear a pump I think. It was on some build up for a dedicated track car.

Ya I saw that one. It was on an EPP project. But that wasn't a LS7 pump. It was aftermarket.

You might want to try dropping Wicked Weasel a pm

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/memb...easel-ecs.html

A while back he converted over to a dry sump 427 for his C5. As part of that process he did a lot of investigating the dry sump alternatives out there. I know he did not go the GM route, I think because of losing the air conditioner but not sure.

Hope that helps.

Yeah we did alot of investigating on dry sumps. Each unit with my 402 build required I lose the air conditioning which I did not want even though my car is mainly a track car.

After some thought we decided to skip the 402 and put in a LS7-427 because the dry sump is part of the setup and you do not lose your air conditioning.

Charlie - are you planning on mounting the LS7 dry sump to a 346? I am not sure that will work, but I am by no means a tech. If everything fits (personally I dont think the ls7 pan would fit so that would be the first issue, but again I am not sure) you would need to move the battery to the trunk. I used the LPE kit. We fabricated a new panel for the PCM and mounted that to the fuse box. Its funny when I do through Tech at the track and corvette guys ask where the battery is

Also we had no problem running lines. We did not use the Ls7 tank because I wanted more capacity so we went with a different tank and then molded to fit around the C5 frame (I dont think you would have the same problem with the LS7 tank). All of the lines fit fine.

Here are some pictures from my build if that helps:

sounds good; I wonder if the '09 Z06/ZR1 tank would fit? not sure if the tank would work/fit better

I have zero experience with either

That would be great if the pan fit non LS7 engines.

do you have a ls7???? if your trying to put this set up on a ls1/ls6 5.7 it will not work the ls7 crank snout is much longer for the dry sump pump! just FYI
