What are the advantages of making a new cover plate compared to the stock unit?

My wife wraps my lunch in tin foil that's heavier than the metal they use for the stock tunnel plate. The after market plates stiffen the car, reduce heat (dramatically if they're ceramic coated), and quiet the car a little. They make a noticable difference.

Yup, and needed to know what size of material I needed to get a hold of to fabricate. Also looking to do my own "thermal abs" upgrade. Summit/Jegs sells a sheet of "Thermo-Tec" adhesive backed heat shield in 24"x48" size for about $60.

I did the budget 1/4 tunnel plate by riviting 2 C6 plates together and using them. Works great
