I have heard a lot of advertising regarding replacement of the stock air filter W/ KN. Tell me about your experience, before I decide to make a decision to go or not to go. Thank's THE BIG GUY ! ! :chevy
Re: Replace stock air filter with KN ? Why ? (TheBigGuy)
The reasons are for power increase. The stock air box set up is very restrictive. The C5 likes to breathe!!! I'd suggest getting a whole new intake - my personal preference is the Donaldson Blackwing. Great flow and sound!!!!
Re: Replace stock air filter with KN ? Why ? (TheBigGuy)
K&N flows better, filters worse. You have to decide what is more important (although I know of nothing showing the poorer filtering caused engine problems down the road). Blackwing, BTW, flows better than stock paper, filters better then K&N (so I've been told).
Re: Replace stock air filter with KN ? Why ? (TheBigGuy)
Personally, I wouldn't replace just the air filter with a K&N, I've never seen an actual increase from just a filter change. However, if you replace the entire airbox with one of the many performace replacements out there, you can see a significant horsepower increase.
Re: Replace stock air filter with KN ? Why ? (yellowy2kc5)
:nono:I dispute both of the posts above me--there is a SMALL decrease in filtering efficiency of K&N/oiled-cotton type filters, but it will not harm your car in any way--ignore that point.
As far as the lack of power increase, that, too, is not true. Any restriction you remove that allows the car to breathe better WILL provide an improvement in power--dyno testing proves it. That said, the power increase will not be as noticeable as removing the choker of a stock airbox these cars come with would.
End point--there's absolutely no reason not to swap to a K&N, you will feel a small improvement..but a new intake would be a much better solution, and provide a lot more HP.

I was chirping the tires in each gear once I switched to a K&N in my '99 Coupe. Big difference in performance. Even more once I cut open the stock air box.

I guess I left out the other reason... it's for those owners who want to retain their stock airbox assembly for the sake of keeping most things stock. On my '99, that was the goal. On my 2002... "Stock?" "What's stock???" :p:

Matt, we aren't in agreement? Seems to me we're saying the same thing

 We are, my friend--I didn't mean to come across too strongly--
I just didn't want him to think there was a real danger to using these filters-- :D
