My 04Z still has the original battery in it and when it goes I will replace it with the same. Before I spend 140 dollars on a optima someone needs to tell me why.As a matter of fact the Delco has to be a great battery because I drive my car rarely so it sits sometimes weeks without starting and never had a issue and I don't use a tender.

If you ever had a side post leak into the battery box, frame and then down on the computer you would know why.

But if you have top post or battery in the rear it is not an issue.

is Optima still the only battery that won't leak? I know that was the case in 2001. My Optima is crapping out on me this season and ran strong since 2001, so I am in the market for a new battery

Me and two of my vette buddies had to replace our optima battery. we all went to a sears die-hard. a lot of batteries now have the no leak sealed case. buying an optima is a waste of $$

I have been doing searches and reading, so it looks like location of the posts is what causes the leaking. Where are the posts on the AC Delco Professional?

if I am reading correctly...

this is good

and this is bad, right?

Correct the side terminal are what I was using when they did leak. The dealer that sold the battery told me they would not warrant leaks so I bought an optima in 02. The optima failed in 04 but I still have that same battery now going on 7 years use. I have noticed that if the car sits for a week it cranks a bit slow. If I use it every 3 or so days it cranks normal. After the first cold morning start it always starts normally.

My Optima is almost 10 years old (installed 2001), and just starting to crank slow this past Thursday when she came out of storage. Plus I noticed some white flcky stuff on the black terminal, so I am going to change it

My ONLY desire is to have a battery where there is no chance for a leak. Is Optima my only option? I have went through the battery leaking nightmare in 2001, and can't afford for it to happen to me again.

I agree I went through the leak in 2001. I had to pull the delco out, the battery box and get to the frame and computer. It all needed cleaning and wire brushing to get the corrosion off. Fortunately I was aware of the issue and caught it early. I primed and repainted the frame and the flat black I used perfectly matched the OEM paint. Almost wonder if it was the OEM paint. After the clean out, neutralizing wash, wire brush, prime, paint all was well.

Now I won't use anything but Optima. I however did call optima and asked if their red top batteries were warranted against leakage. Their answer. NO! So even with Optima I still check. But after 7 years still no leakage, so it has to be better than the OEM Delco.

I agree Excide is good also but my local sams doesn't carry this brand and the nearest dealer is over 100 miles. I already checked.

Exide Orbital is even more expensive that the Optimas.

Looks like Optimas went up in price too, I was looking at my receipt from 2001 and the Optima Red Top 75/35 DT cost me $109.99 plus tax (plus $7 core). I might spring for a yellow top this time after reading about down times. After reading many posts bashing new Optimas quality, I might get a Diehard Platinum

How hard is it to change a battery yourself? (any write up), I want to go in there and do a thorough cleaning along with put in a battery pad.

Ok, I think I found the battery I want to get - Diehard Platinum from Sears. Can this $190 battery leak and how do you change a battery?

It appears to be quite simple:

1. disconnect the negative battery cable
2. disconnect the positive battery cable
3. remove the battery hold down retainer bolt and retainer
4. remove the battery

Battery hold down retainer bolt is tightened to 13 lb ft.

Battery cables are tightened to 11 lb ft.
