How to fill automatic transmission fluid? NEWBIE NEEDS HELP
I'm a new member and this is my first post hope you guys can help. I saw a lot of threads on transmission removal but not much on filling it back up. I just replaced my automatic transmission yesterday since my tranny was going out. Plus I found a great deal on a low mileage tranny that I could not pass up.
1. How do I fill it up back up?
2. Whats the best tool or type of pump to fill it up?
3. How many quarts? (using GM fluid)
Do I use the drain plug near the pan in the left side or the plug that has a tag for limited slip? also, should I open up the plug underneath the tranny to remove some more fluid. It seems like I have more fluid inside.
I would assume filling it up would be the easiest thing but I making more complicated or Im just tired from swapping transmission. Thanks for your time

I filled the car about 4 quarts but now the car is not moving at all. Does that mean the fluid is not complete full? What is the right procedure to fill the tranny up? I'm new at this so it would be great to get any help. thanks

I believe you fill it through the dipstick tube. Not sure how much it takes but its a lot more than 4 qts. Wrong !! forgot these are in the rear!

I filled it up through the side pan. Did not see any dipstick tube. I have more fluids. Now, the car wont move at all. Someone told me to fill it up, then run the car and shift the gears, then fill it up again til its completely full..I guess I wasn't really paying much attention

I believe you are on the right direction. The fill plug is the drain plug is the level plug. Don't look for the dipstick very long I have never changed one of these transmissions, but when I drained my transmission fluid out I used a pump from auto zone, maybe 10 bucks, to pump from the fluid container into the fill plug. Car has to be level, and engine on. It was up on jack stands and ramps. Keep pumping till fluid comes out the fill plug. I bet you will need about 8 quarts by the time it is all over.
Someone else with experience needs to reply here.
good luck

This is how I do it
Fill it up
Start the car
Top it off while running
Run the trans through the gears (on the jack stands)
Fill it up again while running
Take it for a little drive
Top it off again while running

my car is a 98 automatic transmission. Also, what reason would the car not drive even though I have at least 4 quarts. Never messed with a automatic or torque converter before. I should read up on the basic of how it works. Thanks

My main concern is that once its fully filled the car should be able to drive. Right now, the car wont go anywhere since I may only have less the 4 quarts

Damn this thing is giving me a headache. For some reason the car won't fill without spilling and won't go through the system. During the intiall fill I would fill the fluid in while it's running. When I get about 4-5 quart it will drain from the drain hose. But once I take the hose off the fill it will spill. Then I'll shift it through the gears hoping it will get suck in the torque converter. I tried to spin the axle but it would spin FOWARD slowly when it's in reverse and nuetral. Then later it will stop spining like it not enough fluid in the torque converter.
I just don't get why the fluid is not getting sucked through the tranny and torque converter. Also why is it spinning foward in reverse and nuetral.
Any free links on the transmission book? Thanks
