Anybody got a good way to turn the engine over by hand with the steering rack in place from on top so I can see a dial indicator on a valve. I can do it from underneath, but then I need two people. I was thinking of making something, but it's a pretty tight fit. I do have an ARP balancer bolt so it's a twelve point.
I made a tool by shortening a socket about 1/2", and welding it to a pc of flat stock....looks like this:
This will work on a stock or Powerbond balancer, where the front of the pulley is mostly open, and there is room to slip the socket in between it, and the rack.
But on a closed-face balancer (such as the ATI), there's just no room to get anything on the bolt head with the rack in the way. In that case, you can use a non-metallic strap wrench wrapped around the balancer to turn it over.

I like that tool. It doubles up as an attitude adjuster as well.
Automotive Racing Products (ARP) makes aftermarket fasteners and in particular they make a reusable bolt for the harmonic damper (pulley) on the LS1 motor.
