Bill, sure enough you were correct, as was your test that showed this was expected in my car.
I finally got into this clutch job and both belleville springs were broken as you can see here. The magnet was also covered in a thick coat of particles but fortunately no big pieces anywhere (appears the belleville spring on the right side just flattened after it cracked). Guess that's to be expected after 140K miles, though mostly highway use.
Thanks to all for the good advice, especially It's_Go_Time for the thorough write-up and good pics, since would not have attempted this without it!

Well... I call BS on your mechanics knowledge and advice. You can have a BUSTED Beleview spring and still have enough limited slip action on that clutch pack and STILL leave black marks on both sides. Those C5 GM OEM springs are WEAK and there a LOT of people running around with broken springs and don't know it.
Using the test I described allows you to know its bad..
I have the black marks to PROVE IT and the busted spring.
If you test each wheel like I recommended YOU WILL IDENTIFY a problem that you never know you had that CAN and WILL get worse and possibly damage the spider gears or the ring and pinion.
If you have good clutch action on one side and a lot less on the other side,,,,, SOMETHING IS BAD! TRUST ME!!
Ive seen it dozens of times..
88 feet of burnout. Look at the RIGHT side burnout and you can see where it started to fade at the end..

TTT For an Excellent Post!!

Huge thanks to the OP and follow-up posters for the confidence to dive in and tackle this repair/upgrade. My C5 went "THUD" at the drag strip a couple weeks ago and lost forward motion. Still rolls around ok, nothing binding. After initial diagnosis prior to disassembly, my hunch is that the LH shaft is snapped (left wheel spins freely). Since it has been awhile since much of this info was originally posted, possibly there is an update needed? Is DTE still in business? Contact, web, phone info? If not, is there an alternative source for the upgraded Spider Gear Cross Shaft?
Thank You!
Thank You!

You will not know what all is needed until you pull the diff apart. Sounds like you parted an output shaft as that wheel freely rotates (IT SHOULDNT)
Trust me! I am a confident mechanic and I was very hesitant about doing this UP-GRADE. Didn't want to damage a perfectly good rearend!!!
After reading the post numerous times I dove into the repair. IT IS NOT ALL THAT DIFFICULT! A little attention to detail and you save a TON of cash!
You are NOT disturbing the ring and pinion lash and or alignment! All you are doing is adding stronger parts. I HIGHLY recommend replacing the limited slip clutches at this stage of the game!
IF,,,,,,,,,, you decide to have someone do the up-grade, I highly recommend Rick Kim (RKT Performance)

Kick'n this one alive again ...
What are the latest thoughts on replacement springs & clutch packs?
Car is a 2000 C5, ~30kmi, frequent HPDE, and the limited slip is toast. Probably broken springs.
Is DTE still in business? Are C6 parts now the only option?
Thanks
Rob

I rebuilt mine about 18 months (5000 miles) ago, after failure of the LH output shaft, launching on a VHT pad with approx 525 RWHP.
This thread was a HUGE help in getting the confidence to tackle it. Hopefully these updates pay a tiny bit of it back.
I couldn't find DTE then.
Got a kit from "fatguys" on EBay, which included:
Left axle shaft 89060119
Left side gear 19180962
Left side snap ring 12458084
Right axle shaft 89060120
Right side gear 19180962
Right side snap ring 12458084
Axle seals 88996703 (need 2)
Side cover o rings 89047953 (need 2)
C6 Z06 carbon clutches 19132906 (need 2)
HD spring for the clutches 19132817 (need 2)
Rear cover o ring 89047954
Trans/diff seal o ring 12369456
Also had to find a helpful Chev parts counter specialist to help me track down the correct fluid...crud, now I don't remember if my project notes were from before or after this rodeo, but I have listed: Synthetic diff fluid 89021677 (P/N superseded to 88862624). Wouldn't surprise me if you find it has been superseded again...that is my vague recollection.
I've been happy with the results. Posi marks are nice and balanced.
Hope it helps!

This is a great thread
I have my rear diff being rebuilt right now by one of the local master Vette techs which worked at a local dealership. I'm a C6 Z06, but this thread is great to show what the diffs look like when they're torn apart.
I've replaced everything in my diff, and added the new Motive 3.90 ring and pinion...can't wait to get it back together again

I have NOTHING against DTE. I know a lot of people swear by them. BUT,,, There are other as good if not better places out there that can help us C5 and C6 owners with our drive trains.
I do ALL my own work. BUT,, IF........... I ever had to send a trans or Diff out for specialty work, I would send it to Rick Kim. He does amazing work on all the drivetrain stuff plus his shop is a FULL SERVICE repair shop that can take care of any repairs that our cars need.
"" Are C6 parts now the only option? ""
NO,, There are aftermarket parts that are much stronger but,,, They are a lot more money. The C6 parts are a VERY GOOD budget bang for the buck if you have a moderately powered car.
REMEMBER, the trans/differential is ONLY as strong as the weakest part &&&& wheel hop/drivetrain SHAKE is going to break it even if you have the BEST PARTS MONY CAN BUY!!
Bill
Just saying.

Except for the tune I do all my own work as well. Still have nightmares of when I tuned the supercharged Rx7 with a Haltech programmable fuel injections system (done in the relatively low tech '90s).
I did find an aftermarket co with heavy duty bellevue washers for the diff but have been way to busy to tear into it. I'm pushing my luck and have four days of HPDE's on it with what feels like an open diff (absolutely zero friction between the wheels). I keep waiting for it to go BOOM!
Car is only around 400 hp to the wheels.
Thanks
Rob

Good on you.. I don't do tuning either.. I have people for that.. I have my own EFI Live for C5 Z & the wifes C6 but, I only change the easy safe stuff..
One thing that I also upgraded in the Diff is the spider gear cross shaft. For the LIFE of me, I cant tell you where I got it from BUT, it is a lot stronger than OEM and trust me,, they can and do break.

Bumping up, I got my diff torn down ready to order parts for the upgrade but coming up dry on the upgraded spider gear cross shaft. Anyone have a line on that? Is the C6 version of the shaft an upgrade over my c5?

I guess DTE is out of business? I got mine back in 2013.
The C6 Z06 part is an upgrade.
I did my diff using this excellent write up.

I am about to take this on for my 2003 Z06 with 450 WHP and 120k miles.
I bough RH Shaft and Side Gear, LH Shaft, C6Z clutch packs (x2) , seals, and orings, snap rings, etc.
Main question is: why no LH side gear outlined in the main write-up? Is there a reason this is not replaced?
Thank you for any help and understanding here.

Melting Slicks
The side gear on the right side needs to be ordered because it does not come off the original shaft. It is one piece. You'll need the retaining ring too for the new gear and new shaft.
The side gear on the left side comes off and can be put on the new shaft and be reused.
Old shaft (all one piece) in top left:
