Default Blackwing Donaldson Air Filter

I just went to clean and re-oil my Donaldson Blackwing Filter and found that the only Cleaner and Aerosol Oil I have is for my old K&N Filter. Can I use the K&N cleaner and oil on my Blackwing. Of course the label says use only on K&N?????

K&N filters are cotton gauze. The "Blackwing" is a synthetic media. You can use the K&N kit, but the combination of blue filter and red oil may change the color of the media. Why risk a $250 filter?

As far as the cleaning solution, SIMPLE GREEN in a diluted solution will work as well as the cleaning kits if you run out of it, which is usually the case.

For the price of $15, buy the S&B FILTERS kit. They supply the kits for the SLP "Blackwing" and other manufacturers. Their kits come in blue or red oil depending on what color the media is. They supply filters for many of the after market air intake assemblies (HALLTECH for one).

The S&B FILTERS kit also comes with a pre-measured syringe so just the right amount of oil is applied to the media, eliminating the potential of MAF contamination...

I use the K&N kit. Available at my local Autozone. Works fine but you will have a red instead of blue filter.

Been asked a lot. People have used it and it seems to work ok. For me I will spend the $20 on the kit that last 5 years to clean the $250 filter.

Color aside, hotwheels57 is right. I spoke with a rep at SLP about this very thing. K&N oil is for a cotton gauze filter. Your Donaldson filter (now made by SLP) is synthetic material.

Get the correct oil and have peace of mind knowing that your engine will be properly protected.

I reoil mine with a mixture of mineral oil and alcohol in a small spray bottle. The alcohol evaporates leaving the oil. It's an old racers trick.

there are three types of oil out there, petro based, organic based ( vegetable ) and synthetic... cross using the different oils could cause the media to deteriorate.. I would not play around with the oil not specified, the wrong oil could turn acidic when introduced to the wrong filter media...

for cleaning the Blackwing-do you have to disassemble the whole thing or just spray it on the filter as it sits there installed?

You have to remove it because not only do you put new oil on it, you have to clean it first.
