How much oil do I need to put in my 2001 z06?
I just got the motor in my 2001 z06 with the original oil pan. I put 6 quarts of oil in it and it looked like it barley showed on the tip of the stick. The low oil light came on on it so I added 1 more quart. It now has 7 quarts in it and still is right at the bottom of the hash marks on the dip stick. The low oil light is now off but the oil still shows to be low on the stick. I really don't trust the stick so I didn't add any more oil. It doesn't have any leaks. I put it back on the lift and looked all under it for leaks and it was clean. My 2001 coupe I had was the same way. I changed the oil on it and ended up putting 7 quarts in it just to get it to show at the bottom of the hash mark area on the dip stick. Is it normal to put 7 quarts in these or more? I know it says the capacity is 6.5 quarts but The low oil level light shouldn't come on when its barely 1/2 a quart low.

I think it holds 6 1/2 qts normally, and then when I track it, I put an extra quart in, loose 1/2 qt during track day and run with 7 qts most of the time. Seems like it would let you go a little longer before throwing light though.

They supposedly take 6.5 qts but what are you going to do with the extra half quart? I just threw it in the engine and never worried about it. When I went to the track I added a quart on top of that. Never had a problem with my 97 or 03. I assume you mean the bat wing pan when you say original oil pan. The dip stick on my 97 was somewhat undecipherable but the one on the 03 was a standard dipstick and 7 qts would take it to a little bit over the full mark.

Yes it has the batwing pan on it. I actually had to pull the stick a couple of times to see the oil on the stick oil is too clear I guess. Right now mine has 7.5 quarts just to get it to half way on the hash. My engine was completely empty though being I just installed it.
