Another trick for finding a leak after you've cleaned the engine is to spray atheletes foot aerosol on the suspected areas. I'm talking about the stuff that turns into a white powder when it dries. It works great for showing leaks in tight areas that are hard to get at.

oil pressure sensor failures are so common and so easy to fix that in my mind you would have to look at the sensor before doing much else......pressure sensor failed once for me causing only spurious readings, then failed again causing ONLY a leak near the back of the pan area......

Its extremely difficult to imagine an oil pan gasket leak if you have ever seen how there constructed. They have a built in O ring and are reuseable if there in good shape. Unless the oil pan bolts are just LOOSE, I would look else where for the leak.

I had a leak ever since i bought my 2001 Z06, it smelled like something was burning every time I pulled over from a quick drive. My friend checked under the car and saw wet oil. Weired thing was that in the past six month the oil level did not go down.
I took it to a Chevy dealer and they found out it was a high pressure hose that the warranty did not cover so I end up paying from my pocket.

Wow after reading this im goin to check this a little better they told me my oil pan gasket was leaking as well. It was going to cost me 490 something to change it though. 2400 thats just crazy.

OK, I have a 98 C5, 93K miles. Last week I noticed oil spots on my garage floor. I cannot stand an oil leak! I find out that it needs an oil pan gasket. That's great, gotta be cheap right, hell to the no! They are recommending removing the engine to install it along with the rear main seal and timing chain gasket. I am not opposed to spending the money to fix it, I love my car dearly, however:
My questions: Any other options?
what else should I replace while the motor is out?
Should I just replace the motor with a crate motor for an extra $1800?
Never considered replacing a motor for a small oil leak......
PLease help me on this one. Thanks

$2400 is nuts...I can change my oil pan gasket in less than 8 hours on the floor with jack stands. No need to pull the cradle completely, just jack the engine up some and drop the cradle down some. Been there, done that..
Find a Corvette shop or mechanic who knows how to do it..

I think this thread may have saved me!
I had an oil change about a month ago. After about a week I noticed the smell of burning oil. I had them lift the car back up and take a peek. There was oil ALL OVER the bottom of the oil pan and on the cats (I drive fast
)
So they sprayed it all down with a degreaser and started the motor. No leaks.
I ran the car for a day and brought it back. They spotted some oil coming from what appears to be the upper oil pan gasket.
They quoted me like $800-$900 to do the job.
My oil pressure sensor went out about 4 months ago. I'm pretty sure it's the sensor, because a friend of mine had me turn on the car to accessory (without starting the motor) and the oil pressure gadge went all the way to its max reading. How could there be oil pressure if the motor isn't even on? So, we theorized that it's most likely the oil pressure sensor and not a more serious issue with the oil pump.
In reading some of the posts in this thread, I see it might be possible that the oil leak source could actually be from the oil pressure sensor and not the oil pan gaskets---HOWEVER, I'll want to have those re-torqued to spec as mentioned.The oil appears to be collecting at the rear of the oil pan, in between the rear main seal and the oil pan. But if it was only the rear main seal, there wouldn't be oil up on the top oil pan gasket (we have two; upper and lower).
Does this make logical sense? Or am I still out $900 bucks while praying it's not a rear main seal.

Those STEALERSHIPS just LOVE to jump on that oil pan gasket. It must be a real money maker for them!
I bet you a cold one that the source of the leak is from some other source and most likely the sensor.
Get a mirror and flashlight and take a look.

I also have an '01, but not a Z06. It too, has 18,00 miles, is stored winters, and doesn't leak oil...That's why I start the car and let it warm up, 2-3 times during the winter....

I ran across this old post and was wandering why the harmonic damper question? The reason I ask is my Harmonic damper was just replaced and my car never leaked a drop of oil before but on the day the damper was replaced it developed a leak. The shop says the leak was there however there was no oil on my garage floor when I left home that morning.

not to bust on a corvette but choppy shoppy owers think because we drive corvette we have a million dollars to fix them.. hell i tape a honda em on the front from some lower rates..

Stealers ship here said oil pan gasket had a leak. Ended up being the main seal cover at the top. Had it and main seal replaced. No more leaks. Would have cost slot more if they had to pull the cradle. Also really check your filter that it is seated correctly. Ask me how I know!
If you can't find a reasonable and reputable shop in H'burg there is one down here. Used to know one up there but he retired and closed shop two years ago.
