Default How to measure a cam?

I have a new cam from a supplier that would not give me the specs. I want to measure whatever to determine the specs. Can someone tell me how to measure the cam?

Depends how accurate you want to be. You could take some crude measurements with calipers/dial indicator, etc. If you want dead nuts, you'll have to find a shop.

You can measure lobe lift, duration @.050, and installed centerline with a degree wheel and a dial indicator in the lifter bore.

Thanks. I have a friend that owns a machine shop. They said they will measure it for me. They do not usually do engines, but, they have more multi-axis CNC machines than most, and CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) that they say can do it. I will let yall know what it turns out to be!

What is / are the numbers on the end of the cam ?

Then go to the manufactures web site and look it up. There are really only 2 or 3 cam manufactures so not that hard to look up.

You should be able to get close.

It is a new Comp Cam that was custom ground for a vendor; so they will not disclose the specs.

HR117+5 = Hydraulic Roller 117 Lobe Separation with 5 degrees advance

13019R/13023R = these are probably the lobe numbers, call Comp and they can tell you the duration and lift of these lobes.

Thanks, my motor will be a 454 cubic inch LSX motor, with a 9.0 compression ratio.

An engine machine shop can get the EXACT cam specs off ANY cam with a tool called a "Cam Doctor" call around and find out who has one----

454ci will swallow up that cam no problem. It'll probably idle very smoothly especially with the wide lobe separation.
