Car runs for a few seconds then shuts off - HELP!
So I bought a 2001 c5 that was hit in the front. Bags were deployed. When I looked at the car ans ran and drove fine, after they towed it home it wouldn't stay running. Battery was toast at first, hooked the jumper back up/charged it and the car started for about 5 seconds and no matter if you give it gas or not it cuts itself off. The car was low on oil but added some. Thought maybe it was the column lock because the light was on but the column does not lock and moves freely. Also cleaned the key with alc. I tried to look for codes but since the battery died there are no codes at all. Put a new battery in as well and same result. Does anyone have any other ideas? I'm getting desperate. Thanks!

Your post is not clear. When the engine cuts off is the engine just ideling or are you trying to drive the car when the engine cuts off??
Pull your codes and post them. Here is a link to the procedure:
http://www.c5forum.com/ayc/dtcdic.php
Codes have a format of Annnn where A is an alpha character and nnnn is a 4 position numeric value. The code will be followed by an H or a C or an HC. Post your codes here and the character(s) that follow the code.

Sort of soundling like the battery is dead and while you put a jump on it, its only enough juice to run things for a few seconds. The alternator cannot charge a dead battery so you need to have a good one in there. The alternator connects to the battery down at the starter solenoid so you should look at it for a solid and clean connection. The minimum voltage for the computers to run is 12.5vdc static with the ignition off. If you don't have that, nothing is going to work right.

Check your engine grounds. I forgot to attach the ignition ground that bolts to the back of the drivers side head - and same thing would happen, run for 10-20 seconds and cut off. Just a suggestion

Messed around with it today pulled the battery out unplugged stuff etc. got it to stay running. Then I shut it off and tried again, no luck, ran nice for 5 seconds and shut off. Here are the current codes that I pulled up:
C0710
P1571
B0017
B0026
U1040
B0051
-There were others in the history, a lot to do with BCM but no other current. Thoughts?

None of the codes you posted are related to the engine running or stalling. The cause of a problem does NOT have to be a current code. It can also be a history code.
Suggest you use the procedure in the link that I provided above to clear all the codes that you have both History and Current. Then start and run the engine and when it stalls pull and post ALL the codes that have come back.

Melting Slicks
Look at the rubber coupler between the MAF and the manifold inlet. It sounds like there is an air leak and I think is at the rubber coupler where it joins to the MAF

So after you cleared all the codes and then restarted the car and let it idle and eventually stall the only codes that came back were the codes you reported as Current. ie C0710, P1571, B0017, B0026, U1040 and B0051??? None of the H codes are back??
It's not VATS. Vats will prevent the car from starting but not kill it once it is running.
When the engine dies is it an instant stall or does it slowly shut off ( ie over a second or 2 like it was running out of fuel. If it dies instantly I suspect electrical. If it slowly dies I would suspect fuel pressure. Could be bad grounds, poor battery connections (corrosion or loose cables at the battery or starter) or the ignition switch or lock cylinder is bad. Try this several times to see if you can recreate the symptoms. Start the engine and let it idle. Then play around with the ignition key. Wiggle it up and down and from side to side. (Try not to turn it to the off position as you play around with the key) I have a buddy with a 99 that has the engine stall if you touch the ignition switch and when driving if you hit a bump the engine stalls. Pull to the side of the road and it starts right back up. Similar to what yours is doing. Here are some links to look through about the ignition switch. First is a diagnosis thread, second is how to remove the switch and third is repairing the ignition switch:

Check the grounds as well. Here is a thread about grounds:

Click on forums, C4 tech, and start a new thread with your problem for better help.

As I said, go to the red bar above the posts. Click on "Forums", point to C4 from the drop down and then slide over and select "Tech and Performance". Click on "new thread" and then state your car year and the problem you're having. Someone familiar with the 84 can help you. You are in the C5 forums right now....97-2004. When you have a problem you need help with, posting your own thread will get you specific help for your car and your problem. It gets very confusing when people with different issues needing different help all get mixed together in one thread. You can also read the stickys at the top and maybe find your problem has been discussed and you can select "search" and type in some keywords for your issue and read past threads about the same issues others have had before. Good luck with finding your problem.
