C5 Front Caliper in Rear
#181
I know this is a Corvette site but I'm doing this same mod to my 1986 Cutlass. I was only going to do the fronts because it's a popular upgrade with these g-body cars but I ran across one of these threads on here a while back & that made me want to do the rears as well. Here is a pic of how it is now getting everything ready to go on. Blazer knuckles & hubs with C5 Drilles & slotted front rotors all the way around.
Calipers
Both sets
Since its not a direct bolt on like your cars here are the brackets thats going to make it all possible

Hi,
I did this brake mod to our 02 Z06 that has 14" Wilwoods on the front.
This combination works awesome! I use C6 z51 rear rotors to retain the E Brake. Because the rotors are thinner compared to the front C5 rotors, I had to add a piece of .250" plate to the bracket. See pics. If you don't, when the pad gets about halfway worn down it will slip between the rotor and bracket. NOT GOOD! And DANGEROUS! Unless I missed it, I have not seen anyone mention this. If you use the the C5 front rotors its not a problem, other than you won't have a E Brake.
The pics are not the finished product, just tacking it together to test fit.
Hope this helps.

I ended up just taking old pads and removed the pad from the baking plate. I then welded the plate to the new pad. That helped space it out so the piston was not so far out. I had already powder coated the brackets so didn't think about modifying the bracket.

C5 Caliper Swap
[QUOTE=melvingregory;1579668305]
Parts used:
C5 front Calipers - no mods
NAPA Part # 83212A Disc Brake Hardware Kit
GM Caliper rebuild kit
C5 front brackets - modified for clearance.
C6 Z51 rear rotors - no mods
NAPA Part#38253 Brake hoses - 18 1/2" in length verus 16" stock
, OEM should work, but I didn't like the stress put the lines at the frame mount point. Plus, I wanted to replace hardware with new anyway being this car is a 1998 with 80,000+ miles on it.
My wheels are OEM C6Z06 off a 2008 Z06
front: 18 inch x 9.5 inch P275/35ZR18
rear: 19 inch x 12 inch P325/30ZR19
Performance? Braking appears somewhat better, but I didn't do the mod for performance per say, as I don't track or race the car so I would let those that do make the statements about that aspect of the conversion. Logic would say it should be better. I am not getting any errors on the DIC. I have probably put 10 - 15 miles on the car since Thursday night. I will be going on a run this sunday with others in the club and that will put about a 100 or so miles on the car.
Will an 18" rear wheels clearance?

Thanks much
Looks sweet and looks like plenty of clearance...I am thinking of making this swap on my 98 next spring

Caliper bracket
I started the process this afternoon, found two interesting issues that I will pass on to everyone. You have to mill the caliper bracket down to make it fit. A stock bracket will not fit. Also, I am going to find some longer brake lines. The stock line for the rear and the stainless ones I got with front calipers I feel are too short. Otherwise I fitted everything this evening and it looks like it should be a workable solution.
These are shots of one bracket modified and the stock one on the other side.

Do you recall how many mm you needed to shave off the brackets? Just recently started upgrading my C5 and this looks great. Thank you.

I just filed them down and test fitted as I went. It ended that I took them down to where they were flush with the rest of the casting. Remember your calipers will float on those brackets.

C5 Calipers/Rotors
A couple of notes....There's a later post about a spacing issue (.250") and the potential for the pads falling through....You did not experience this issue? Also, Wilwood makes a 12.88" rear rotor that may eliminate some of the clearance issues....

The clips won't keep the pads from falling out. Any time you use thinner rotors, it's possible for the pad to slide between the rotor and bracket once the backing plate gets close enough to the rotor.

I have an '03 Z06. Could I just buy the front Z06 calipers, rotors, brackets and be done with it with no clearance issues? I have 19" wheels in the rear. I'm doing this for looks. Not worth .2" for the C6 Z51 rotor and the mods involved, IMO.
I know I will lose the e-brake, so I'll have to make sure I ALWAYS have the car in gear when parked.
