Default What to look for when buying an engine second hand

Hello-

I came across an LS2 402 from Texas Speed that the seller acquired through an estate auction. It's still in the shipping crate and all the parts and pieces are accounted for.

The only thing that concerns me is that the engine was not covered with a dustproof cover and there are no freeze plugs installed. In fact I could see some debris from the crate on top of the pistons.

The price is right and it's the build I want but I'm concerned I'll have to break the engine down and clean it before installing which I'd rather not do.

Will a disassembly be necessary or can I blow out the debris and call it done?

Thanks,
Mowpow

I would just wash the thing down with kerosene and call it a day.

Got no complaints from my TSP 402 after 3 years and over 20+ track days. I would give them a call and get their thoughts. Good luck.

It doesn't take much in the way of dirt to screw up a new build. I wouldn't put it in service without pulling down. If you are getting a good deal for the engine just factor in new bolts, take it apart and make sure everything is clean and in order before using. If you are not up to doing this pay someone in the know to do it for you. It is not worth the risk in my opinion to "just blow it off".
