C 1287 HC and C 1288 H. Service Vehicle Soon, Service TC
I recently had my 2001 in and replaced the two oil pan gaskets to eliminate a leak and the front rotors and pads replaced. Shortly after getting car back i started getting the C 1287 HC and C 1288 H codes. I am aware that they are the "steering sensor rate malfunction and traction control issue"
Any suggestions? I'm wondering if when they lifted the engine or pulled the brakes perhaps they knocked something out of alignment or pulled a ground loose....
Thanks

If its out of alignment, then you will get these codes but you can also get them if the steering wheel position sensor died or got messed up. Is the steering wheel straight?

It "Learned"
After 2-3 days of clearing codes, thanks to info on this forum, the problem is now gone. It took a while for the car to "learn" that there wasn't an issue. it's 3 days now and no new codes.
Had rain yesterday and tested active handling...it still works. so i guess we are all good!
Thanks

I get these too. I tried the TSB plastic clip for $3, but it still comes back. I'm taking it in Monday, the dealer said they can zero the sensor, but if that doesn't work, they will replace.

The physical sensor is, lets say, not the most robust mechanical design. Internal contacts are (recall slot cars) quality. It will go bad and cause bad things to happen (random brake applications) when you are driving. Dealer cost is ~ $80/sensor and ~$250 labor to replace.
