It is the auto dimming feature. Your rear view mirror should also dim. The passenger side mirror does not have this feature.

Auto dimming mirror. It has the button you push and a green light comes on. Joe

There isn't much of a fix for this. If you can somehow find a new replacement they are outrageously expensive. And if you get a used one this will happen again. It could be a few years or it could be a week after you buy it. There aren't many out there that are newer and fewer miles than yours so I wouldn't go with a used one.

There is actually an outer membrane which holds the fluid to a regular inner mirror. Some people choose to remove the outer layer and then it becomes a regular mirror like your passenger side one. The interior autochromatic rear view mirror will still work perfectly fine. However, if you go this route please take extreme caution during the removal as the fluid is a carcinogen which you do not want to handle and also must be disposed of properly. It will flow out when you remove the outer layer.

Personally, I live with the always tinted mirror. Some may say it looks funny but I don't care. My car has racked up 99k miles as a DD and I expect things to wear. It is still functional and I don't even notice it anymore.

There are more than a few threads on this subject so spend 5 minutes to search and read and all of your questions will be answered.

Thanks for the correct info> you gave me the best info. On tech. Support. It happened to me on a 2001. Glass places won,t even touch them. If you don,t want the dark tint. On my 01 i had a piece of mirror glass cut thin it worked fine double faced tape thin.. But like you said i can put up with it. Thanks again as i get things like do you drive the car. They go bad.
