lot of choices out there, in general the aftermarket offerings are a better way to go if the budget can support it

Fair enough, but I wanted to know what others have used already with good results on the dyno.

I know people have had good numbers with AFR and Trickflow. People also like Patriot Performance and TSP heads. They have a million options on heads so the price will vary. Mine are worked over LS6 heads. I don't know if The Vette Doctors did it themselves, sent them out , or bought from someone else but they work great for me.

From what Ive heard some 243 heads that have been worked over can put up some outstanding numbers.

This can go forever, but PRC 2.5 LS6, you can keep stock rockers ect, great flowing head.
Advanced induction 243's
Total engine airflow 243's
AFR worked by Tony mamo
Trick flow specialties 215cc heads.

Very true, we offer a program for oem heads. We charge 1600 for the work though and it does come with all new hardware.

Dont they end up flowing just as much if not more than many of the aftermarket heads? If so then the 1600 doesnt sound as bad considering what you would pay for a good set of aftermarket heads.

Oh hey you've got a '98. I have a pair of 806 heads that I'm looking to sell. You could get them ported and whatnot, and then you could keep your perimeter-bolt valve covers and your coil brackets.

I already have ported 806 heads from a later model C5, with bee hive springs and a torquer V2 cam. Wanted something to push me over the 400whp mark since I now make 386whp with my current setup.

Yes, they are very good. The combination should also be looked at.
Not just what heads but the cam is just as important and the supporting mods.

We can/do/have netted over 400 with a proper combination. My fbody with a 9” rear and less of an exhaust than a Vette has made 440 on a mustang dyno so it not hard to do with the proper combination

As far as AFR’s being the best, they are one of the top heads yes but they are not alone at the top. Tony does good work yes but its not cheap and they have a 210 now and off the shelf that should be good enough.. if not the TFS 215 head will do or a MAST black label head.
BUT your talking about 1000 more than us working your heads.
Your looking at $2050 for a proper head and cam from us to meet your goals

This is really just my opinion, so take it with a grain of salt...

If staying with 346 cubes, you won't see much more power from the afrs/tfs over a nicely ported set of 243s. Maybe 10 HP through the curve...15 tops in a max effort setup. So it is up to you to decide if double the price is worth a few more ponies. My car makes a healthy 460 through the AI heads with a 226/230 cam and trapped mid 120s, full weight, with me bogging off the line on street tires. No bog and more seat time, and I am looking at high 120's MPH. Put a drag pack on and the car is definitely tens capable.

There was a guy on here who just ran mid tens at over 130 MPH in a c5z. He is running ported 243s.

Don't forget with trickflows, you have to buy aftermarket rockers, further driving the price up.

Intake runner size is really more important to your engine combination than flow numbers-
Also your *realistic* goals and predicted use of the car comes into play
Large runners and high flow numbers are great--but only IF you intend to run the RPM's up high consistantly (6400) or have Larger cubes---Too large of a runner will kill off lots of bottom end TQ and can make your car doggy off the line----Smaller runners will help bottom end TQ and midrange HP -best used on a D/D weekend racer type application or an A4 without a Stall converter---Large runners/flow #'s act like a large cam--they move the usable power range up higher in your RPM band-
A stock LS1 has a 200cc runner
A stock 243 LS6 has a 210cc runner
My opinion is to stay in that range for most cars--The next step up to 220's is where you can affect your bottomend TQ- But if you have a stall converter or lower gears they can help you get past that range quickly and get upstairs where the flow can make some serious HP--

I think stock 243 castings are the best option. Have them ported by AI, TEA, or your favorite machine shop. I like my local machine shop (D&F Performance in Berlin, NJ) They do work for anyone that wants to ship them heads.
My buddy ran 10.52@133 with 243 castings worked by them in his 03 stock cube Z06

Patriot is junk.

TFS are great and have numbers to back it up. But, they're expensive.

Has anyone ever run an impressive number with a set of AFRs? I'm not saying they are not a good option, but, what are your goals?

What is the difference between 241's and 243's? 243's are off the Z06's right? 5.7 LS6 I think.
