Default California Smog!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well I just got my Registration renewal and it is time for my first California Smog Check. I sure would like to know if there is going to be a problem with my Power loader, 3.42 gears, Yank T/C, and Tric air intake. If anybody out there has any experience please fill me in.

Thanks

Yep Yep! All the '97s had to be smogged last year and the '98s this year. I have not seen one person complain of this board about not passing smog.

Considering all the modding that goes on among this group, you need not worry.

With cars up to 2001, as long as all factory-installed emissions controls equipment is in-place and functional and the car pases the two parts of the IM 240 tailpipe test, you'll pass smog with the modifications listed.

The smog check visual won't consider anything ahead of the MAF and behind the rear O2S. The smog check doesn't care about 3.42 axles or loose torque converters.

If the car has current DTCs or is running so badly due to improper calibration it flunks the tailpipe test, then you'll flunk the smog check. If the inspector notes any tampering, you'll be refered to a state referee station for retest which is the kiss of death in California.

Starting sometime this year (probably) and from now on, the Smog Check is going to connect to the DLC and read the computer memory for data other than DTCs. Starting possibly sometime in MY02 and for sure in MY03, GM and other manufacturers are inserting into the calibration a "global checksum" value GM calls "calibration vehicle number" or CVN. The CVN will instantly allow an emissions controls test that connects to the DLC to determine of the ECM calibration has been changed.

Once the State of California implements the CVN testing, it is rumored that cars that go to smog checks and have altered calibrations detected will flunk immediately.

Look for other states that followed Califoria's lead with IM 240 to move to inplement CVN checking, too.

Your tax dollars at work.

Hib,

Can you elaborate on what altered calibrations will flunk?
For instance, if the Ltrims or the PE vs RPM Table or the Ignition Tables are adjusted, will these flunk Cal. Smog with the new CVN testing? BTW, My C5 is an '97.

Thanks,
