This must have been done before. Must have. Yet I ran two searches and saw nothing other than outdated references to LPE having once offered it.
Now... in researching the tech for a totally different side project I am considering, I discovered that a low-res thermal imager can be salvaged from older Cadillacs (as well as various BMW, Audi and others). So far, I am finding the Caddy used the Raytheon L3 and BMW used the FLIR PathFinder kit. Both produce 320x240 resultion....
... which isn't great. But when you consider that a Fair quality thermal cam runs $3,000 to start, these salvaged units are suddenly quite affordable and acceptable! LOL
I've been planning a Spring mod fest for the 99. A lot of sound deadening, HUD install, etc. So now I am wondering about adding FLIR to the car. Why not?
-----> Has anyone else done it, and packaged it up in a clean appearing and wired setup?
-----> Does anyone have leads on where to get good prices on salvaged car parts?
-----> If anyone is aware of OTHER flir swaps from other sites, can you please post up links? One of my questions now is also whether the Caddy HUD display for the thermal cam (it looks as though these units projected up onto the windshield) would work in lieu of the Corvette speedo hud.... hrmmmm....
The unconfirmed part number for the Caddy Raytheon L3 unit is: 88987303 and it seems to still retail for a pretty penny, if it can be found in stock. Ebay for $250+ seems the best way to go if L3 is the on to use.
Sounds like an interesting mod. I'm still working on my mods. I'm starting with 2 giant saw blades, that extend in front of the car, allowing my to drive through a forest. I'll keep you posted.
