Default 2002 corvette rear main seal leaking

I have a 2002 Corvette with 141,000 miles on it and the rear main seal is leaking is it worth it to fix it with that many miles on the engine?

Lets see......the LS engines go 300-400k miles plus as long as good full syn oil has been used, even beating the heck out of them (our C5 bracket racer we ran 200k miles 1/4 mile at a time and was still going strong when sold) so YES!!! These are not the engines our grandfathers drove that only went 70-100k miles before needing a rebuild. I tear some down with 150-200k miles and the original cross hatch hone marks are still visable with NO detectable wear ridge in the cylinders, crank and rod bearing look like new yet.

That or sell it to us for cheap....we will make good use of it!

The rear main and the rear cover seals are the ones prone to leak over time. Replace it and enjoy for another 100-200k miles.

while rebuilding my transmission i noticed the tale tale signs of rear main seal leaking so of course since everything was out i replaced it.

Had a corvette shop quote me $1000 to replace it so it is pricey if you dont do it yourself but well worth it!

Id pay 500$ all day long for a rear main. I have built my car myself, from the motor, suspension, aero, all of it, but all that work for a 10$ gasket pisses me off

Thanks 406!

It is not a super hard job....drop the torque tube and bellhousing is right there. A bit longer if the rear cover seal needs replaced.

We hire the good techs from Chevy that do this day in and day out and have it down pat.

You guys will laugh at me and scoff at me, I don't care..LOL! My 2001 Blazer had a rear main seal leak, it was very minor,, I cleaned it up real good and I used JB Weld to seal it.. 3 years later, and no more oil leak. $6.99 total cost... Was it the right thing to do? Maybe not.. Did it work? Yes..

Oil pressure sending units also are common leak areas...good point!

If it worked, you did well. The aluminum blocks have a certain amount of porosity as well and it that case if the leak turns out to be at a part of the block itself, JB weld can work wonders if the area is cleaned and prepped well.

In the 60's and 70's, we used what ever we could to keep our hotrods on the road as the budget was beyond tight back then.

It's alot of work for an oil leak, in the belly of the beast for sure. Low mile cars need it too, I changed mine about 20K miles. At least plan to do something else that's cool, while you're in there.

What would you guys recommend as something worth-while to do while you're in there? Clutch, rear main seal, new cover (bell housing?)

Anything else?

If it's a manual car, I'd consider replacing the clutch since there's no extra labor
