Default Can the column lock be completely removed?

So I keep hearing about the column lock and having it disabled due to issues with that system. I will be removing my wheel in a few weeks to install a shiny new reupholstered one. While I have it off is there a way to file it down and disable or completely remove that system and guarantee no future issues? I searched with no success around my specific question.

Thanks fellas!!

Not sure, I imagine so, but you CAN disable/ make it not kill the car until like 256mph instead of 1mph with HP tuners.

If it's an auto, I believe they remove the parts. On mine the wheel does not lock because they removed the parts. I wasn't there for the fix at the dealer, but 13 years and no problem.

While you have the column apart, you could remove the whole actuator assembly, but as mentioned, that would not solve the BCM synchronization issues.

My 98 already had the CAGS fix, and I just did the LMC5 fix so I'm not sweating anything any more.

Yes you will be fine with the LMC5. Your year has the CL relay which you can unplug and I recommend doing that to take it out of the 12 volt system. The LMC5 instructions cover that. It is right above the BCM. The green connector clip was a little tough to remove but it is in a difficult location for an old guy.

I also recommend you view their video on installing the LMC5. If not on their website yet, it is in their eBay ads.

Further you can change the commands G1201 to none and G0801 to no to eliminate the the column lock from working.

You may be right but this was what my tuner changed

G1201
The type of anti theft system the vehicle uses.
- Class2: Serial data anti-theft (eg, Corvette, Holden).
- PWM: Pulse width modulation anti-theft (eg, F-body).
- None: Anti-theft system disabled (eg, used on engine transplants).

G0801
Only the following values may be entered into this table:
- Class-2
- PWM
- None

I went through the column lock hassles in December. Column lock stranded the car in our driveway. Ordered the LMC5 and unlocker at the recommendation of 8vette7 and it worked exactly as described. Very happy.
