I have a 2001 vert. I have read so much about column lock. What is it? Should I be on the look out for it in my 01? Any info greatly appreciated!
Colum Lock is - when the solenoid that locks the steering wheel does not retract when the ignition key is inserted leaving the car not driveable. There is an official GM recall for the problem.
Do a search here on the forum for column lock ...and you will find hours of informative reading!
In 2001 they removed the column lock on the Automatic cars and made a shifter lock. But for the 6speeds the problem remained.
Suposedly in 02 they upgraded the column lock to a revised design for the 6speeds. The same one the recall uses.
You can get the bypass which bascially just involves disconnecting the power to the solenoid, and the bypass tells the computer that everything is operating ok so you dont get a code set on the computer.
