Default Gas leak when filling tank

I noticed some fuel leaking under the driver door when I filled my tank. Not a lot and it stopped shortly after fueling.

Any ideas on what it could be or what to look for.

Thanks

Take the inner fender off & have a look at the rubber fill hose or did it burp back up while filling.

How full did you fill it? What year is your car?

If you overfilled the car, some of the gas will drain to the outside of the car. But spend the time now to inspect! It would also be prudent to have a small fire extinguisher handy in the car / garage just in case you do have a leak!!!

I would like to know what you find as well! I dont have a "Leak" that i can see. But when I fill the car up ( to where it clicks ) I can smell gas from inside the car. I looked all over and saw nothing

You guys that fill up until the pump quits (maybe does or maybe it doesn't) are risking an overfill. If that happens you have just most likely screwed yourself since you probably just damaged your evaporative emissions system.

Do the math. You know how much the tanks hold and you know how much fuel is in the tanks before fueling from your gauge level.

Lastly, your gauge will tell you what level you have after fueling.

PS: Why fill your tanks around town and carry the extra weight?

C5's hold 18 Gallons between the 2 tanks !

You never mentioned what year C5 you have ? 04's between a certain Serial Number sequence had some Cross Over Tube problems / issues that GM addressed via a "Extended Warranty Deal" but alas, that has expired.

Mine is a 2001. Never had any visible leaks, just the smell after filling for the first few miles and occasional PO442 Codes. Replaced gas cap twice so it is something else.

When I filled up today, I thought of this thread.

A little gas will burp back up in the fill tube surround, which is inside the quarter panel.

The quarter panel is attached to the door jam inside of the door weather stripping.

It could be that we (I smelled some also) are getting that small amount of fumes from behind the quarter panel leaking into the cockpit from that quarter panel/door jam connection.

My car only lasted a minute or 2, then when away.

My car is a 2000. Thanks for all the input, I'll be getting it up in the air this weekend to pull the inner fender and take a look.

Check the fuel tank crossover tube clamps. Mine had to be tightened down because it was leaking a bit. You Have to jack the car up from the rear, secure it with jack stands, and look straight up above the diff from drivers side where the tanks are. you may see some fuel stains on the walls by the clamp areas. See if its loose with a screwdriver.

There is a door seal right around the door that seals to the lip of the opening and this seal is not outside of the rear quarter attachment point.

If you fill it with the window open gas vapors will get into the cabin and they can be quite strong.

If you open the fuel door and look in the bottom of the opening you'll see a little drain hole. If any gas is kicked back out of the filler neck it will drain out that hole and run onto the ground just under the quarter panel.

I've been filling my car until the pump kicks off. It's been 6 years and >60k miles so far without an issue. I doubt the previous owners were any more careful filling the tank and the car has 140k miles total on it without any repair receipts for the evaporative system.

If you have doubts, the best bet is to do as other have suggested and check the hoses.

Default 2001 - simular problem

Fill full - gas can be seen running out under the drivers side - makes a puddle about 3' by 2' then stops. Took the left wheel well off - problem was farther down - suspect that where the hose connects to the left tank could be the problem - could not get at it from the wheel well - the hose went through a wall.

Where / how to get at where that hose clamps to the left tank?

You would have to drop the tank to check that clamp
