300 - 500 lbs lighter along with 500bhp (425RWHP) would be godlike!

Blowing away a Viper at $20K fewer bucks would be fantastic, but you can be absolutely positive that the C6 will annihilate ANY stock Mustang, supercharged or otherwise! 2700lbs and more than 400 HP is good, very good!

Glad to see rumors of this technology possibly hitting the automotive industry. I first heard about the camless engine about 4-5 years ago when it was being used in one of the diesel rigs racing in the Pikes Peak race. At the time I thought wow camless engine how does it work? Got the low down on it and was told the automotive industry is usually about 5 years behind the "big big truck" industry. Hope to see it surface soon. Less weight, less friction, less parasitic loss of energy.

What if the real headlines are:
GM fakes false firing story to hide the real truth about their new engine for the Corvette, the DOHC designed (Blah, Blah, Blah)....
Maybe at this juncture, we're all being fooled.

Have to raise the :bs flag here!
My dad, who is a Vette owner ('61) and an aircraft engine guru, says he's never heard of a 'cam-less' aircraft engine. If fact, the big radial aircraft engines used a ring-type cam with roller followers.
Mercedes, on the other hand, is experimenting with electronically metering the amount of oil in the lifter, thereby effecting duration on-the-fly.

Camless motors?
Starter less engines?
Wagons with no horses?
It's the work of the devil I tell you. :smash:

Yes, radial (round) aircraft engines DO have camshafts AND pushrods. The technology is ancient. Remember, these engines can operate with no electrical system. They have magnetos for spark like a lawn mower. Where would the power come from to operate electric valves, anyway?
Maybe the new engine will have no camshaft OR crankshaft, put out 500HP and weigh only 37 pounds and, oh yes, get 172.7 MPG.
I hope the C6 is not as small as some of the drawings I've seen....not very Corvette-like if it's not much bigger than a Miata.

Re: 14 fired at GM for leaking info about the new LS2 'camless' 500HP engine.....
There are 3 items I am very doubtful of:
1) 300-500lb weight reduction. For one thing, if this is secret insider info, why can't they narrow it down to more than 200lbs? This sounds like BS.
2) camless engine, 42V electrical system. I'd love to have these, but would be amazed if GM had them out by 2004.
3) aluminum frame. this part sounds like it was made up by a non-engineer, who blindly thinks "aluminum is better" for EVERYTHING. There is a reason the C5 has a steel frame, after all. Compare the NSX to the 911. One all-aluminum, one all-steel. They weigh the same. Aluminum doesn't automatically equal a huge weight reduction.
And if they mean electro-hydraulically operated valves like have been seen in R&D engines for the last 5-10 years, then they have NOTHING to do with aircraft engines from the past.

ohhh.... that engine. Heck there's been a picture of it in about every issue of
Popular Science magazine. It's usually next to the drawing of the
family submarine :)
