There is a fat black rubber O ring inside the fuel cap. That O ring gets old and CRACKS. That is what usually causes that DTC. Look at the O ring seal and if its cracked, just get a new one.
I agree.. There are other thing that can cause that DTC but start there and report what you find.
You didn't say what year your car is. There was a fuel system problem on some 2004's that can cause P0442. There was a service bulletin and an extended warranty issued to cover those who experienced the failure.
