Service Active Handling SWPS DTC 1287 1288
2002 Coupe Auto
I have also been getting very frequent DTC codes 1287 and 1288, steering wheel position sensor errors, for quite awhile now which disables the active handling. I cleaned all the grounds on the front frame rails and reseat both the EBCM and SWPS connectors, but that didn't work.
The codes will set as frequent as driving for only 15mins..this was a daily occurence. I was sure i needeD to replace the SWPS.
Just for the hell of it i decided to clear the codes...spray some electrical contact cleaner on both the SWPS Connector and the Sensor ... soaked them pretty good..let it dry a bit...connected the sensor back up and drove the car for 6 days..almost 250 miles before the CEL came on again...Soaked the connector and sensor again and drove for about 300 miles before active handling lit up again.
Any ideas what is going on here...do i need a new sensor or just try to clean the old one a little better.
Appreciate your electrical thoughts

From what I've seen you need a new sensor...

Yep. SWPS is a common failure. I had to replace mine. It sounds difficult but it's really not. The hardest part are some of the lower screws that require you to lay on your back. It probably would have been easier if I had removed the seat. Oh, and getting the damn grommet back in the firewall. I think that was the hardest/longest part of the job. I couldn't get to a good angle and it took about 2-3hrs to get the damn thing back in.

The part number for the SWPS is 88965543. They cost about $70.00 and take about 2.5 to 3 hours to replace. Had to replace it on my '04. Luckily they still make them for the '01 and newer.

Ya..I figured my sensor was bad quite awhile ago.
Im just a little curious as to why hitting it with some electrical cleaner has "rejuvenated" the sensor by 5x.
What internal effect has the contact cleaner had on the sensor components....hmmm?
