transmission fluid & filter change
i am about to change the tranny filter and fluid on my 99 c5.
also changing the 1-2 shift solenoid.
my question is should the tranny fluid be drained hot or cold?
i have the DIY manual on this but id doesn't say either way
to drain it , hot or cold.
input would be greatly appreciated!

im sure its probably "better" warm, but realistically unless you have issues and expect chunks floating around that arent already stuck to magnets (which would mean you're kind of screwed, imho) i doubt it matters significantly. if you want ultra peace of mind without all of the fun 2nd degree burns, just drain and flush it a couple of times. transmission fluid is cheap.

The A4 REFILL PROCEDURE is extremely specific on how to do it and do it CORRECTLY!
If you do NOT follow the procedure to the LETTER,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, You better be ready to purchase another transmission or repair the one you have,
READ AND FOLLOW THE SERVICE MANUAL GUIDLINES/PROCEDURE!
Just drain it cool!

the only part to be specific on is filling as the convertor is moving. i dont think refilling a 4l60e is dramatic enough to break out the caps lock and underlines..

yea i know he knows his stuff, but this isnt rocket science. have you ever done this procedure before? the hardest part is cleaning up the mess it makes. 4l60e's tend to suck, but ive never seen one damaged by changing its fluid.

Not enough fluid to cool it properly and make proper shifts makes it very unhappy.

Question:
I have a 2000 Vert with an LS1 and 4L60e in it, it has 236k on the clock and the transmission went out. I drained and removed the transmission and differential and TT. Im getting the 4l60e rebuilt by a good reputable person out here in Oklahoma. But im unsure of how to fill it afterwards with it being dry. Also unsure on any procedure of filling the Differential and torque converter. I have a yank torque converter with a 4000 stall i believe, the previous owner had it installed, not sure on mileage of the tc but not sure how to tell if it is going bad either. so with it mounted to the tt still is there a way to make sure its full and primed? and is there a write up to get everything back together properly? I see dissassembly and removal alot but no re-assembly so I gather its basically just the exact opposite of disassembly? Also, what fluid should I be using to fill the diff and transmission with? will Mixing fluid with whatever is currently still in the TC cause any problems?

Can you be more specific on what actually went wrong with the transmission, if there is any debris /contamination of the oil then the Torque converter needs to be flushed if not pulled apart to clean it out and tested for correct operation

I use the factory service manual for almost everything. It is a real asset especially regarding torque specs. If you are doing your own work you really should score at least a used set of manuals. There is so many aluminum parts that every nut and bolt is critical.

I lost 3rd and 4th gear, and 2nd started going out. To be more specific, started getting jerks and slippage in 3rd and 4th gear. So when I drained the transmission fluid it was dirty red but no major debris coming out, I didnt check the magnets to look for larger debris before I removed it. The fluid coming out of the TC right now is dingy red same as transmission. No Debris from there either. Sadly I didnt do a TC test prior to tearing it down (stall test) so im not 100% sure on the TC. As i stated its a Yank TC and the place that is rebuilding my tranny will give me a new Stock TC and fluid for 150$ but I dont want to replace the Yank TC with a stock if I dont have to.
