Default Any experts on 4l60e auto box and its functions?

Just a general question about the use of the box..

I tend to cruise around in D , but when driving gets a bit more spirited I do use the ‘1’ ‘2’ ‘3’ function and manually shift through..
It is great fun, holds gears longer to red line all of that.. also being in 3 stops the over drive and final gear going in too soon, sure everyone is familiar with that.. Also believe its not doing any harm as the shifter transfers an electrical signal rather then going through gears, although some wear maybe on shifter..

So Question is ..
I thought it was straight forward gears, so 1, 2 , 3 and overdrive in last two?
I was under the impression, if you put in ‘2’ for example.. car would still pull away in 1st, but would not change above ‘2’ until you manually tell it..
And put in ‘3’ and pull away car wouldn’t go above ‘3’ again until you tell it to do so by shifting..

However I have been told it actually pulls away in ‘2’ not 1 when you do that.. is that correct does anyone know?
Will it do any harm?
1st to second shift is quite firm on these boxes, if you do manually it can snap the back end a bit and get a bit of a twitch , doesn't seem to do that when pulling away in '2' so maybe it is correct..

Thanks in advance

Other than causing the engine to work harder and the Torque Converter to work harder (produce more heat) I don't see how that could hurt.

REMEMBER!!! HEAT is the enemy of any transmission!

Yes, If you put the shifter in 2, It will be in second gear no matter what on
these.. GM's have changed this over the years.. but in my C5, 2 is second..
It's supposedly to help reduce torque in snowy situations when taking off from
a stop

Thanks foggy, that also would explain when you go from 1 to 2 manually you get that 'snap' must be more power going through

I was logging the other day and checked each gear. 1 stays in 1. 2 starts in 2 and stays in 2. 3 starts in 1 and shifts up to 3. And of course OD starts in 1 and shifts up to 4. I learned something new on 2 not knowing it starts in 2. Thanks!
NP running around in 3 except for possibly lower MPG and more heat, which others have already said.

Interesting '3' starts in 1st.. I was generally before..... Starting in 2 to keep it going above on hard driving, maybe 3 a better option, or 3 until you get going then drop to 2 when on move to hold it there
