If you are using the key fob to activate the alarm, it will contribute to the draining of the fob battery. It shouldn't be any worse than using the fob to lock / unlock the doors. The more you use the fob, the quicker it will drain the battery.
Are you experiencing short battery life in your fob? If yes, how long is the battery lasting?

The more you use the fob to lock/unlock the doors or activate the alarm, the more drain there will be on the battery life. Just curious why you are activating the car's alarm system with the fob on a repeated basis? I don't think I have ever used the panic button on my Fob.

While I don't use the factory alarm a lot, I do use the fob to lock/unlock the doors and open the rear hatch. My '02 also has the Window Valet that I use to lower and raise the door windows.
The fob still has the OEM battery. My '08 Silverado is my DD and the fob for that truck still has the original battery.
What are you using for the battery? I like Duracell batteries as they seem to last longer than similar type of Ray-O-vac batteries. Especially for TV, cable or audio system remotes.

I'd imagine every time you press any button it drains the battery the same amount, regardless what button is used.
My FOB no longer has a functional alarm button, as I had pocket pressed it twice in a short period of time. So I popped the top and placed a tiny piece of black tape in there to ensure that won't happen again.

I don't know how you carry your keys. Maybe you're depressing the buttons while in your pocket or possibly a rubber button is weak.

A 1 year battery life seems very low. There is something going on with the remote and it shouldn't have anything to do with the alarm going off. The alarm was triggered by you unlocking the car from the inside. I'm guessing you reached in somehow and depressed the unlock button on the door. The alarm is powered by the car battery.
