Default Good "low grunt" cam?

Base 2004 manual C5. I love the way it drives but I wouldn't mind having a little more "grunt".

I was originally looking at doing a 224/224 112LSA (had the old TR224 in my Z28 and loved it), but now I'm wondering if even that's more cam than I really want. I almost never turn past 4K (not into getting out and racing anymore) and I don't want to kill gas mileage (DD and I'm enjoying 30+ MPG). Just looking for a little more idle lope and low/mid range zip.

So I'd appreciate some suggestions on more torque related cams (obviously bigger than an 02 Z06 cam). I'll be installing Kooks (or LG) LTs and upgrading valve springs, but plan to leave the stock 241 heads.

Get that cam, advance it 4 or 6 degrees. Fun

To clarify, you're saying get the 224/224 112 and advance it 4 to 6 degrees (bring the peak down)? If I remember correctly, (in the case of the TR224) the cam is likely to already have 4 degrees of advance ground into it. So you are suggesting 8 to 10 degrees of advance? Any issues with P-to-V clearance with that much advance?

There are better cams out there. Go to LS1tech.com. I'm not going to say that most people here don't know what they are talking about with cam choices, or that there is very limited talk on cam swaps here on the corvette forums, BUT I will say over on LS1tech.com there is a lot more talk, banter and experience with cam swaps...

Sounds like you want to go mild.. I'd suggest the Streetsweeper TQ in that case, but not sure why your keeping it under 4,000rpm for all your driving. Fun doesn't even start until 4k rpm IMO..... There are lots of cams these days that make power everywhere over stock... so if you want the power down low and you want to wind out to 7000rpm you could look at the Streetsweeper HT.

It's not that I never go abover 4K, it's just that in my daily driving I don't get over that (too much traffic in the city). As a result, I'm looking to build more low/mid range usable torque rather than have a dyno/track queen that has lots of high RPM HP that I almost never use.

Edit: I just looked up that Streetsweeper cam. That's not really any smaller than a standard 224 cam (same lift, lower LSA).

There are a ton of options out there, enough to make your head spin. I agree, there's lot of reading available on the LS1tech forum to give you a better understanding of cam specs, etc.

Previously I had a TR220 cam, 241 heads, LT's, etc. (all from the PO). Made 370/370 at the wheel. Power was smooth. Sadly I had a #7 piston failure and so I'm building a new motor.

A big consideration for me was cam ramp rates. very aggressive lobe ramp rates can be tough on valvetrain components. Cam Motion is considered a good choice for lobe design. I just bought their Titan 4 cam to go with some cnc ported 243 heads. For your needs you might look into the Titan 2. (221/226 112+2, .595/.586). I'd suggest giving them a call to discuss the details. Another nice feature of their cams is that they offer upgrade cam core materials. I opted for the 8620 material.

You can achieve this goal no problem. The key is picking valve events that will make the engine more efficient at filling the cylinders at lower RPMs. The key to doing this is to open the intake valve a little sooner and to increase the lift. The Titan 1 is designed to do exactly what you want. This camshaft will make more power everywhere in the curve and still drive great:

I just placed my order for the Cam Motion Titan 3. It is supposed to arrive Monday Oct 16. I was also looking for as much Low end performance as possible. I participate in Road Course HPDE. I am very excited to get it installed, tuned and Dynoed. I have a BPP Vortex Rammer, Fast 92 intake, ported LS2 Throttle body, Livernois Stage 2 ported heads and AR Headers to compliment the cam. Being in Michigan I won't get to track it till next season.

Interested to hear what your results are.
