The more I read, I think 11/32's might be a great compromise in cost/benefit. BTR sells 11/32 in pretty much any size for $109 shipped. Quite a bit stiffer than 5/16, at a fraction of the cost of dual tapered 3/8 or modifying the heads.

I may try a set since I'll be hitting up the track more this year as well.

ALSO

You may want to consider an upgraded steering pump from Turn One. You'll have the steering pump out anyway, and the upgraded pump is a nice unit. Slightly higher steering effort (which I like) with some heat reduction. Great for HPDE.
