Anyone ever see a water pump fail this way? I haven't.

This happened at the track. Obviously I'm afraid I have a blown head gasket causing coolant pressure, but is this really the weakest link in the coolant system? Or is this more likely Just a manufacturing defect? This is an AC Delco pump bought on Amazon about two years ago. Anyone know the correct amount of press fit? I can measure the sizes when I get it off.

So its hard to say exactly what the press fit is as they are tapered and not perfectly round but the press fit is .002" at best. Heat the aluminum casting and steel tube by 150 degrees and you lose about .001" of that. I pulled my old water pump from the junk pile and it clearly was glued in with an orange sealant. The new pump that failed only shows a tiny ridge of orange sealant recessed deeply.

Might peen the casting before inserting if it is only hand fit tight.
