“Pull out key, wait 10 sec”
Gas tank needle bottomed out, as if it suddenly broke, reading empty. Shut the car off then “pull out key wait 10 seconds displayed on computer screen. Fired it back up and after a few miles gas meter functioned fine. Pretty sophisticated computer lol. Impressed!!

Drifting
If you're getting that message on the DIC then it might be wise to carry around a CLB if you don't have one installed or are aware if one is installed, like the LMC5. Also monitor battery charge.
Some more information on your car would help also (fill out your profile, tell us what model year and transmission you have in your opening post, etc).

From the sticky on column lock.
2001-2004 A4's
No Change Required - they didn't install the Electric Column Lock (ECL) on those years, in the U.S., after experiencing so many problems.
I have an 04 6speed Targa. So column lock isn’t possible?
sorry I misread. I have the MN6

Those are the RPO codes the car was built with. RPO = Regular Production Option.
The GM recall service did NOTHING to install a permanent fix for the column lock system. The GM solutions are pretty much GUARANTEED to fail. Not a matter of IF. Just a matter of WHEN it fails.
If your car does not have either a CLB (Column Lock Bypass) or an LMC5 installed it is just a matter of time before you are left stranded by the C5 column lock system.
Google Compliance Parts LMC5 and there will be plenty of reading about the LMC5. The LMC5 is the preferred solution because it abandons all the Factory and/or dealer column lock wiring and modifications in place because it installs at the BCM. The CLB requires removal of the recall steps done by the dealership, in most cases, in order to function correctly so it is no longer the preferred solution. Determining what was done during the recall service can be an uphill effort so it is usually better to do the LMC5.

You give the computer in the C5 far more credit in terms of error correction than they ever had designed into them.
The pull key and wait......... error message has absolutely nothing to do with the fuel gauge. It has all to do with the column lock system in the car.
When the fuel gauge does drop to empty, and you absolutely will experience it again if it happened once, can be reset to show the fuel level again by pressing the RESET button on the right side of the dash but that does NOT fix anything. The cause of the drop to empty is corrosion buildup on the fuel sensors. By pulling the codes you can determine if the issue is the drivers side fuel tank sensor or the passenger side fuel tank sensor.
Corrective action when the problem becomes chronic is the application of a 20 Oz bottle of Techron Plus Concentrate to a 1/3 or less full tank and then fill the tanks with premium. Usually takes several applications of the Techron to clear the problem.
